Wrote to the U.S. Military to stop the Sons of Confederate Veterans involvement with the Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps JROTC

Nearly two weeks ago I wrote the U.S. Military leaders and every member of the Dept. of Defense Board on Diversity and Inclusion to not allow the Sons of Confederate Veterans (SCV) to be involved with the Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC). It was a total of 25 certified letters with return post cards.

Obviously if they allow the SCV involvement with the JROTC to continue the entire DOD Board on Diversity and Inclusion becomes a joke. Responsibility for colluding with SCV is now borne by the entire U.S. Military leadership. 

The SCV planning to try to meet with the Dept. of Defense to overturn the ban of the Confederate flag by the U.S. Military. I think my letter will have the Dept. of Defense think twice before touching the SCV with a ten-foot pole.

The SCV is trying to put on their best face in this press release, but I think the background information I provide shows their real face. The fact that they think they have any chances of engagement with the U.S. military besides the military talking to them solely for the purpose of humoring them and keeping the SCV from being a nuisance shows how out of touch they are. 

The U.S. military depends on recruiting young people to join the U.S. military. Young people, in particular those that might choose to go into the military, are in a large part minorities. They are those what will need the educational opportunitiees that the U.S. military affords. They are the ones who often don't have good opportunities otherwise. 

To these minorities the Confederacy is not an attractive thing and hinders recruitment. Whatever polls might say about public opinion regarding the Confederate flag in regards to the public in general, it isn't very popular with young people who the U.S. military hopes to enlist.

Recruiting likely is not going to be helped when the general public finds ot that the DOD is working with neo-Confederates and are the means by which they are insinuating themselves into public education. Parents are likely to be aghast that neo-Confederates are getting involved with their schools. 

The military also has a huge budget and needs support from the general public and they also need to look to the future as to hope much support they will have in ten an twenty years among a public in which fondness for the Confederacy declines steeply with age. 

The letter mentions that the United Daughters of the Confederacy has a medal they are giving to JROTC cadets also. 

I also mention that I am focusing on this one way of multiple ways the U.S. military works with neo-Confederate groups. I suspect that they will likely be checking into everything they do involving neo-Confederate groups. 

I also think that their strategy will be to end all programs involving neo-Confederates in a hurry before I can make a public issue about it. If they don't, a public campaign will likely get them to end the program and additionally allow me to educate the general public what type of people the SCV are. 

I am am somewhat swamped helping a lot of groups on a lot of projects, but I am making time to work on opposing the SCV. 

Collapse of the Confederacy continues. Neo-Confederates freak out. / What do I do next? /UPDATE

In the past I would be blogging about each monument controversy or issue regarding the Confederacy.  Now there are so many monuments going down and Confederate symbols being removed I am overwhelmed. Also, what really do I have to offer in commentary? They are going down without really any opposition. I am somewhat stunned by it all. I think maybe they overlooked this and I find they haven't, maybe there overlooked that, and I find they haven't. There is stuff I never heard of or I had forgotten about and it is being dealt with. 

One of my activities is to track how Breitbart reports on contested history, monuments, historical memory, etc and I have a fairly comprehensive set of Breitbart articles filed away. But the problem is that it is overwhelming me. I print them out in the morning, some more around noon, and then in the evening and staple them and then hand write their date on them so I can organize them and find them easily. I have selected Breitbat since they represent the ideology of the White House and they seem to comprehensively cover the issues of interest. 

Also, I am helping out local activists. One set wants to rename Lamar St. in Dallas to Botham Jean Boulevard. The other wants to rename Woodrow Wilson High School in the Dallas school district. 

And I am on to something really huge concerning Dallas. It will rewrite a part of American history and explode the establishment view of the Dallas past. Taking a lot of time, but it won't be long before I am finished. Maybe in August.

So I have been really busy. 

No doubt the school text books which pander to the Lost Cause and have uncritical accounts of thee Confederacy a free pass will not be acccepted for much longer. 

With the upcoming elections it is likely that Confederate monuments in national parks will be subject to review.

I still have a few tasks left to bring down the Sons of Confederate Veterans (SCV). Some churches still pander to them, JROTC is working with them, and the UDC is still giving gifts at U.S. Military academies. All this will need action. But the SCV and UDC memberships are disappearing with age anyways just like the Civil War Round tables. It remains to be seen that I need to do much at all. I might want to focus more on personal things now that the neo-Confederate movement is crashing and coming to an end. 

I am sure there will be odds and ends to do in 2021, but this is bringing up what will be next for me. After Neo-Confederacy is demolished what do I do? 

It might be argued there will be odds and ends to follow up on. However, the few counties or cities with Confederate monuments will likely have their own local groups dealing with it and I won't need to be involved. 

As I have said in earlier blogs, the few places which still have Confederate monuments will increasingly be seen as backward and creepy. When there are a couple hundred Confederate monuments in a state, any one monument won't cause much comment or stand out. When there are only five left or three, they will be in the news as the last Confederate monumnts in the state and the source of never ending news as the struggle continues over them and gives the locations a really bad repubation. 

For a city or county the fact that they have become that creepy place in movies, will sink in when they lose competition for a processing or manufacturing plant or distribution depot or some facility. It will sink in when businesses there have difficulty in attracting talent and holding talent. 

So the remaining monumentts will likely take care of themselves. 

I think by the end of 2021 I will have the neo-Confederates out of the establishment also 

So what I am doing and I am already transitioning to it, is work on the racialization of the landscape as a whole and not restricted to only Confederate items or even Confederate and slavery related items, but everything. 

I have done a first draft theorization about landscape reparations. I am theorizing about street names. I am developing a set of tactics. 

Anti-Neo-Confederate may become fairly inactive, not now, and not soon, but at some point I am going to be working on the issues of secession a lot, especially when the secession movements take off in response to Trump not being re-elected. And I will be working on deracializing the landscape. Those might be new blogs, and this blog will remain for the record and not be very active. I haven't decided that is the plan, but it might be the plan in the future. 

So in conclusion, I am somewhat stunned, and after I wrap up dealing with the neo-Confederates I am going to move on to new challanges.

Collapse of the Neo-Confederacy and what will happen to remaining Confederate statues. /UPDATE

Confederate statues are coming down everywhere. They are being removed all over the place.

There are so many that I am overwhelmed trying to keep up.

One important trend has emerged. It used to be just prominent statues in major city centers that were the focus of efforts for removal. Now it more minor Confederate statues, statues in less prominent locations.

Most importantly it is statues in smaller cities and towns, the effort isn't confined to major metropolitan centers. Also, as major cities get rid of their Confederate monuments entirely it is becoming a mark of being provincial or a small town with a small view when you have a Confederate monument.

Suddenly you are seeing the next tier of smaller cities start looking at getting rid of their Confederate monuments and even smaller municipalities. This is going to put a lot of pressure on smaller towns to get rid of their Confederate monuments.

As more and more Confederate monuments are removed, the ones that remain will seem more and more anomalous. As larger towns get rid of their monuments, small towns which retain monuments will mark themselves as backward. People won't want to move to such a place. A factory will find it an impediment to hiring skilled professionals and technical help. Other towns competing for a factory or other commerical establishment will mention that their rival has a Confederate monument.

When there are three or four or five possible locations to choose from it will be easy to discard a place that still retains a Confederate monument.

As these forces drive small towns to get rid of Confederate monuments those towns which still then retain Confederate monuments will look especially backward and menancing. And it doesn't seem at the present much pressure will be needed to get smaller towns to get rid of Confederate monuments. They seem to be coming down in small towns fairly frequeently.

In the future perhaps even horror fiction will adopt the idea of a small town out of the way having a Confederate monument as a sign of evil lurking there.

If you have a tomato festival or hay festival or antique festival a Confederate monument will be discouraging.

Also, the neo-Confederate groups themselves will appear to be more and more fringe. A couple decades ago they were people who sort of pushed a romance of reunion type of interpretation of the Civil War. Those type of people are no longer in control. Now the type of people who are running the show are like the Chief and Deputy Chief of the Sons of Confederate Veterans (SCV) Heritage Committee. They are also an aging group of people whose membership's average age is increasing.

Also, defenders of the Confederacy have become very partisan and aligned themselves with one political party over the other. Also, the Democrats have decided that being anti-Confederate is a politically winning position to take. Donald Trump has emerged as the great champion of the Confederacy.

It used to be the centrist Democrats were scared of being seen as critical of the Confederacy and it was Jimmy Carter who got Jefferson Davis his citizenship back. Those days are gone. The Democrats are finding Confederate things that even I didn't know existed to be removed.

With Donald Trump's disastrous management it looks like the Republicans are headed towards an electoral disaster.

I think the Confederate monuments at the national parks will be the focus after the election.

The Confederacy is imploding at a rate that just astounds me. It is an implosion which is self-reinforcing for the reasons just given. By Nov. 2020 having a Confederate monument still will mean either there is a court case and the city is prevented from immediately acting, or it means that your town is really creepy.

The Sons of Confederate Veterans is an extreme right political organization. It needs to be recognized as such.

New Orleans and Savannah alerted about forthcoming Sons of Confederate Veterans national convention.

So far what we know about the Sons of Confederate Veterans (SCV) forthcoming activities is this.

2020 National Convention in St. Augustin, Florida. Activists there are very aware of this forthcoming event.

The United Daughters of the Confederacy convention is scheduled in Richmond, VA, Nov. 5-9, 2020. Typically they hold their convention in Richmond every other year. So the 2022 convention is likely to be in Richmond in November. However, will all the change, any thing might happen. As the climate cools towards the Confederacy neo-Confederate groups are becoming more secretive about their activities.

Again, this is simply to express counter opinions an in no way will I support actions that are illegal.

For the longest time the press didn't want to deal with neo-Confedeacy.

However, that has all changed with Charlottesville protest.

One big change is that fighting neo-Confederacy is in the news in mainstream media. Stories which would never of gotten covered are now getting coverage.

The plan to bring down the Sons of Confederate Veterrans. The how to.

I have been asked how the Sons of Confederate Veterans as an organization can be brought down. Also, some clarification as to what I mean by that.

CLARIFICATION:

1. I don't mean violence or vandalism or lawlessness. Such type of actions are counter productive and unnecessary. They are also wrong. Issues and view points should be a matter of public debate and discussion. I don't mean harrassment like anonymous phone calls or flashing lights in people's eyes and stuff like that.

2. I do mean educating the public as to what they stand for such that they will have no credibility and no assistance from other groups, and individuals will be embarrased to be known as members.

The Sons of Confederate Veterans before the public represents itself as a sentimental organization with a nostalgic fondness for the past

1. I am going to research and make it publically available. It will focus on what the SCV states in its publications and what merchandise it sells and what its actions are.

2. I will be asking individuals to help me get the work out. On Twitter, Facebook, in your blog, on your website, or whatever social media you use, to get my research out to the public.

POSTSCRIPT:

As the real face of the SCV emerges, I  think their influence will decline. It will also educate the public what honoring the Confederacy is really about.

Again, I don't support violence or something like violence.

The SCV along with the UDC constitute the two major influential groups working to keep Confederate monuments and defend the Confederacy. We can shred their credibility by letting the public know what they really believe by quoting their own words.

Already, I am noticing that things are being pulled off line.

The author, Chaplain-in-Chief White of the Sons of Confederate Veterans (SCV), sees opposition to President Donald Trump as being driven by the devil.

Time to bring down the Sons of Confederate Veterans.

The other major neo-Confederate groups have gone under or just live on as remnants.

The League of the South is just perhaps a dozen or maybe two dozen.

The Rockford Institute is acquired by the Charlemagne Institute.

The Council of Conservative Citizens is just a remnant.

Southern Partisan has long since ceased publishing.

The Abbeville Institute is still operating. Though I don't know as if too many members have positions in any university.

What remains is the Sons of Confederate Veterans and the United Daughters of the Confederacy. It is time to bring both organizations down by the means of exposing them.

I am going to have time to do this, since the immediate agenda, of taking down the Confederate statues in Dallas, seems to be over. The court case will wind up, the statues will come down. I will have to be photo documenting everyting and gathering all the news articles, and other things of the historical record, and then I am done.

I was in a situation of having to do research on the Confederate War Memorial to be prepared to support bringing it down if the city council didn't vote to do so, and also to gather all the records of what was happening, news articles, video,print, webpages, etc. and archiving it, as well as doing photo documentation. Events would move fast and then slow and I was constantly racing to catch up.

The contextualization committee for Fair Park seems to have come to a halt. I am also finishing up the research  on Fair Park and writing it up so that isn't going to be a big burden.

I have also finished reseaching the entire racialized landscape. Work will be more oriented to writing it up, then Powerpoints for presentations, then video.

So in terms of working on the Dallas racialized landscape, it is now going to be done at my pace. The city of Dallas has largely stopped doing anything. I can set my time devoted to it to a set amount each week and balance it with my work on the neo-Confederate movement in general.

Now the focus will be on the neo-Confederate movement.

I have set up my video logging work area. I purchased tripods, got carrying cases for their storage. I found my handycam and re-read how it works, got some accessories, a table to do the video cast, etc. I am going to do my first video starting next Monday or earlier.

I think I am going to outline the podcast and readit from a PowerPoint, but I am not going to write a script.

I have to make up a short introduction video for AntiNeoConfederate with my resume. There is a lot of stuff to do to set up an operation. Also, I am going to make podcasts. I want to add working URLs into the video, and I probably want to drop in some text boxes. So there is some software things to learn also.

I think the SCV provides an abundance of topics to talk about.

4. Counter protesting at the 2020 SCV reunion in St. Augustine, Florida. Local activists there are already planning protests. If possible drive down. Confederate Railroad performed at neo-Confederate event held by the Sons of Confederate Veterans and reported in the Southern Partisan

In this Brietbart article Danny Shirley is all innocence saying, "I've done nothing wrong" and attributes the name to being derived from regional pride. He is quoted saying, "I love the part of the country I'm from and I will never apologize for that."

However, it turns out that when the band started they were quite the defenders of the Confederacy.

The 2nd Quarter 1993, Vol. 13 Southern Partisan (pp. 42-43) had an article by neo-Confederate Devereaux D. Cannon Jr. about "The Southern Heritage Jam," put on by the Sons of Confederate Veterans at their new national headquarters on May 22, 1993.

The article has a picture  of  Danny Shirley with the caption, "Danny Shirley, lead singer of Confederate Railroad, the "Best New Country Band of 1993," rallies the troops." These would be neo-Confederate 'troops.'

The article makes special mention of Confederate Railroad and thanks to Confederate Railroad as defenders of  the Confederacy. I quote:

"The first started by Alderman exploded as he introduced the final act of the evvening, the award-winning, and politically incorrect, "Best New Country Band of 1993," Confederate Railroad. The young men who make up that band are more than proud of their country and heritage, as the name implies. They are often asked in interviews whether they are criticized for having "Confederate" in their name. Each question offers them an opportunity to "witness" for Dixie, and opportunity which they never pass up."

"Southern Heritage Jame I was put together on a shoe string, with no advertising budget. Despite that, it provided to be a grand success and will grow into an annual event. (Rumor has it that Waylon Jennings has agreed to headline Southern Heritage Jam II.) ... The Jam was a success because  so many  artists were willing to donate their time and energy to benefit Southern Heritage. Confederate Railroad is to be especially commended in thsi regard. They played a concert earlier in the day at Jackson, Tennessee. From that concert they drove some 150 miles to donate their time and talent to the cause of the South, and then immediately set off, at 1:30 a.m. Sunday, to invade Ohio."

The article then urges other artists to support the Confederacy like the Confederate Railroad.

Danny Shirley sought to get the support of neo-Confederates by supporting a neo-Confederate event. According to the article are proud of the Confederacy. Devereaux Cannon mentioned as the "Chairman" of the Confederate Heritage Committee of the SCV.

Letter about the history of neo-Confederacy sent to Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings

Since the Dallas Task Force on Confederate monuments failed to get any information on the history of Dallas neo-Confederacy, the public hasn't been educated fully as to why these monuments need to go down. So the number of Confederate named streets was a very short list and none or maybe just one or two will be changed. The Confederate monument in Pioneer Park might end up staying. It doesn't look like anything will be done for Fair Park. The Commission on Cultural Affairs didn't vote on the Task Force's recommendations.

So I wrote this certified letter to Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings with copies sent to all 14 city council members. 

Some of the supporting documentation I will put after the letter and some will be inserted into the letter. Further I may have explanatory notes which will be in square brackets [ ].

Dear Hon. Rawlings:

The Task Force on Confederate monuments did not research or investigate or report on the history of neo-Confederacy in Dallas and Texas.

This has had the unfortunate result in that the public hasn’t been educated and doesn’t know the motivations of the people who erected these statues and what was the ideology behind them. There were presentations about the fact that Dallas was a white supremacist society during the period in which they were put up, but the historical record of the beliefs of these organizations and supporters of the monuments has not been examined.

This results in some not really taking seriously the reason to remove these Confederate monuments. The need to eliminate Confederate street names is not taken that seriously and rationalizations are given to only change some. As of 10/15/2017 it is unclear what will be done with Fair Park. The one-third replica Lee plantation house, Stratford, isn’t being discussed, the remaining memorials that seek to honor Confederates aren’t addressed.

So I think it would be useful that you and city council get a sampler, a small sampler of what neo-Confederacy stood for in Dallas.

1.       The United Daughters of the Confederacy in 1934 and 1935 campaigned against a play Jute that was planned to be performed by the Oak Cliff Little Theater. The UDC opposed it since it was planned to use an interracial cast to perform it. The performance of the play was prevented and the Oak Cliff Little Theater closed down. The Texas Division UDC President in the UDC convention minutes reported it as a triumph in the defense of the South.  The Dallas Morning News reported on this multiple times: “Interracial Body Meets Opposition of Confederates,” Dec. 4, 1934, page2; “Quince to Revive ‘Jute’ on June 4 at Cliff Theater, April 27, 1935, page 10; “Title Role of ‘Jute’ Still Remains Uncast,” May 13, 1935, page 6; “Cast for ‘Jute’ Already Complete,” May 17, 1935, Page 14; “Confederate Daughters Oppose Playing Whites and Negroes in Drama,” May 18, 1935, page 6; “Another Confederacy Chapter Opposes Two Races in Theatricals,” May 23, 1935, page 6; “Guarantee No ‘Social Upheaval,’ Quince Asks Protests to Cease on Mixed Cast for Play ‘Jute,’” May 24, 1935, page 2; “Quince Drops ‘Jute’ In Face of Protests,” May 27, 1935, page 7; “Oak Cliff Merges Membership with Dallas Little Theater’s,” May 28, 1935, page 14.

2.      Walter White of the NAACP came to speak at a YWCA against lynching in 1937. [Correction, 1938] The campaign against his speaking engagement was so ferocious that it was moved to a different Y for safety, a police guard had to be assigned, and White had to fly in at 3 pm and fly out at 6 pm for his own safety. The campaign was led by Walter E. Hurt, Commander-in-Chief of the Texas Division of the Sons of Confederate Veterans.

3.      An extract for John H. Reagan, from the Dallas Morning News, April 28, 1897, page 1 in which Reagan explains that the restoration of white supremacy after the Civil War was more meritorious than any of the Civil War battles that the Confederates fought.

4.      A report on a speech made by the Historian General of the Texas Division of the United Confederate Veterans at UCV meeting in Fort Worth asking that all African Americans be sent back to Africa and giving forth on his biblical theories of racial inequality. It is from the Confederate Veteran, Vol. 24, No. 12 pp. 529, Dec. 1916.

5.      Selections from the John B. Hood Journal of the John B. Hood SCV camp in Dallas in 1965. The raw rancid racism really shows what Confederate “heritage” is all about.

I could supply a lot more. I want you and the city council to understand the motivations behind these monuments and other Confederate items of the built environment of Dallas and not be inclined to be lax in addressing the issue involved instead of strenuously de-Confederating Dallas.

This is from the Texas Division UDC annual convention minutes. I extracted into a page the Texas Division President's comments from the year book. It succinctly summarizes the attitude of the UDC.

The article was mailed. You can get this article from the Dallas Public Library. It is from the Dallas Morning News, April 29, 1938, pages 1, 12. I sent the entire article with the bibliographic note. The headline was, Protest Made Agasint Negro Speech Plans: Earl E. Hurt Says White People Should Guard Racial Purity."

Walter White, historically famous leader of the NAACP was scheduled to speak in Dallas before the Dallas Interracial Commission against lynching. A campaign was led against his speaking. This really shows what Confederate "heritage" in Dallas was about. 

The intensity of the protest was such that the speaker had to be guarded by police and the venue moved. This is from the article, "Police Guard Appearance of Negro Speaker: Antilynch Work To Save Black Bodies, White Men's Souls," Dallas Morning News, April 30, 1938. 

Walter White had to be flown in at 3pm and flown out at 6pm by airplane for his safety. 

This is the raw racism of the Sons of Confederate Veterans at that time. Earl Hurt said that he speaks for the organization and other organizations. .

This is from John H. Reagan, Confederate veteran and former member of the Confederate cabinet at the dedication of the Confederate monument which later was moved to Pioneer Park.

Reagan finds restoration of white supremacy glorious – Ed Sebesta 10/10/2017

In this section of a speech given by John H. Reagan, former member of Jefferson Davis’s cabinet, given at the dedication of the Confederate monument in Dallas in 1897, we see that Reagan regards as more glorious than the battles of the Civil War the restoration of white supremacy after the Civil War. Note his racism in reference to “a servile race” which makes “reconstruction worse and more humiliating than war.”

“… The strife of the war is over, peace has been restored. It is true that in this restoration we had to pass through a period of reconstruction worse and more humiliating than war ---“

(Here the speaker was interrupted by the arrival of Mrs. Hayes and family, who were enthusiastically received.)

“But we have the fruits of peace, and it is one of the grandest things connected with the memory of that struggle and of what followed. Our country’s resources were exhausted, our property sacrificed, the bravest and best of our men slain upon the battle fields, denied the privileges of self-government, subjected to military power, the attempt made to subject us to the control of a servile race. With all of this, the highest compliment that could be paid our people seems to me, better than all the victories of battle, was that under such circumstances we were able to preserve the organization of society, to re-establish organized government, to restore the industries of the country and to establish constitutional laws which protect and vindicate the rights of a free people.” (Applause.) [Bold face added.]

The restoration of white supremacy, the overthrow of Reconstruction, the maraudings and terror of the Ku Klux Klan, Red Shirts, White League and the Knights of the White Camillia and just general violent white terrorism is according to John H. Reagan is “the highest compliment” that is “better than all the victories of battle” in the Civil War.

It was generally understood in the early 20^th century by Confederate and neo-Confederate groups, such as the United Daughters of the Confederacy and the Sons of Confederate Veterans, that the Ku Klux Klan of the Reconstruction period, as well as other white terrorist groups was the effort of the ex-Confederate soldier.

The Confederate Monument at Pioneer Park is a monument to white supremacy. It needs to go.

The John B. Hood Journal was the publication of the John B. Hood Camp of the Sons of Confederate Veterans (SCV) and the Dallas Public Library (DPL) has a bound copy of four issues from 1965. They show the blistering racism of the SCV and which is representative of the mentality of neo-Confederates then and now.  This is what so called Confederate “heritage” is really about.
