Confederacy becoming identified with idiots

The era of so-proclaimed leftists or liberals who come up with complicated excuses for the Confederacy is coming to an end.

One of the significant sources of support for Confederate monuments and memorializations of various sorts comes from liberals and leftists in the South who still haven't mentally left the plantation. They have their Confederate ancestors and have involved complicated arguments for the Confederate thing they have hanging on the wall or on their mantel.

You read these articles where they have Confederate memoriabilia in a room and their book club  or something is coing over and now they are worried people will get the wrong idea. Of course the real issue is that they will see them who they really are, but the editors of these publications tend to be sympathetic to the Confederate sympathizeer.

That garbage is finally going to be completely extinct.

We are entering yet another stage in which support for the Confederacy becomes identified with fringe characters, delusional characters, and generally fools and idiots, and reactionaries.

Stumpf is from Comfort, Texas, but I don't know if he is associated with the camp out there that hosts the Sam Davis Youth Camp, formerly of the Sons of Confederate Veterans.

By the way, South Korean and Taiwan have universal military training. They are trained to fight other soldiers as Shane Stumpf found out. They aren't habituated to subservience to white people either.

The newspaper article made a point of decribing Stumpf's racist garbage he had on the wall and also that he had on his wall a Confederate flag.

In another venue the governor of Mississippi decided to not support stay at home orders to suppress the coronavirus epidemic but declare an April Confederate History month. Nothing like this makes it clear that Confederate heritage had deep links to stupid.

Whereas in the past the complicated story of the self-identified liberal or leftists with Confederate sympathies might actually get someone to listen, this I think is over now. The very last bit.

As for the general public support for the Confederacy will be further identified with people like Governor Reeves or Shane Stumpf.

His Facebook posting is a photo of the head of the Robert E. Lee statue, with the following text.

The destruction of these monuments, erected in the loving memory of our family and fellow Southern Americans, is both heinous and horrific. If the, and I use this term extremely loosely, "leadership" of Louisiana wishes to, in a Nazi-ish fashion, burn books or destroy historical monuments of OUR HISTORY, they should be LYNCHED! Let it be known, I will do all in my power to prevent this from happening in our State.

You can see from the text, Karl Oliver sees the removal of the monuments as being their destruction. Karl Oliver states, "The destruction of these monuments, ..." in reference to the monuments in New Orleans, of which one of them he has posted a picture of the head.

This is very interesting in that it shows that a monument only does its function, the promotion of a historical view, on public display. A tree that falls in the forest when no one is there does makes a sound, but no one hears it. So essentially a monument which is removed from public display in a government space or a space giving it credibility, has its function destroyed. Karl Oliver intuitively understands this and sees the monuments as having been destroyed.

Also, a monument removed to a museum where it is explained as a physical element promoting white supremacy also has its function destroyed.

So Karl Oliver is calling for the lynching of not just those who physically destroy monuments, but those who would have Confederate monuments removed from places where they can do their reputational work.

Burn Confederate flags on memorial day, so many to burn also

I will be burning Confederate flags on memorial day and putting it on Youtube. I will be burning and doing periscope broadcasting also.

I invite other people to burn and record it and put it on Youtube or facebook.

A lot of people know about the Confederate battle flag, but there are a fair number of other flags that you can burn and let people know about. You can burn over a dozen flags with Confederate origins.

This flag, and when you see it don't let them tell you it is the flag of Somalia, which is similar, is a Confederate flag. I have seen it flow when I was walking off the campus of a university in the South. It was being flown by  a fraternity which has a reputation. They were standing in the front of the house and you could sort of tell from their expressions they thought they were pulling off something. Flying a Confederate flag but no one knew it.

The 1st national Confederate flag is also popular for people and institutions to fly when they want to fly a Confederate flag and avoid a reaction. They are not concerned that Civil War buffs recognize it because they generally  don't care.

When a state, municipality or county adopts a Confederate symbol as its symbol it is a Confederate-identified entity. They are an entity that has chosen to identify with the Confederacy.

They should  be referred to as Confederate identified to surface the reality of what type of entities they are. Also, this identification isn't necessarily restricted to Confederate flag symbols. It could be any Confederate symbol such as the seal of the Confederacy, or a visual representation of Confederate soldiers, or a monument.

You don't owe anything to a Confederate identified entity and they should be considered occupiers. You are American and expect nothing less than an American polity.

Being Confederate identified consequences that those seeking to identify with the Confederacy have not foreseen.

Without discussion homophobia and Confederate identity are linked.

This is a major LGBT news site. They also have a fair amount of coverage of astronomy and pop culture and new technology.

This iconography linking the Confederacy and homophobia will upset some white LGBT in the South. But with web sites making this link they will be isolated in the LGBT community in the South as racist excuse makers if they are not already are so isolated. The LGBT flag is a rainbow and is about an inclusion of diversity and is globally used.  The Confederacy is inherently  anti-LGBT symbol of losers.

Also, 30 years in the future some defenders of the Confederacy will be arguing that the Confederacy is okay, but the state of Mississippi misused the flag.

The movie is going to be titled "The Free State of Jones."

The producers are now lining up talent for the movie. The following is an article in the Clarion-Ledger in Jackson, Mississippi.

The story of southerners who opposed the Confederacy is largely not known to the public. This movie will results in a significant change in popular historical memory. The movie will first be released and show in theaters, then it will be available as a DVD, then it will be shown on television both broadcast and cable. Then it will be on Netflix and Hulu. It will be one of the movies shown on cable to fill channels.

Film critics will review it. There will be articles about southerners who were against the Confederacy. The public will be aware that areas in the South that were not supportive of the Confederacy were areas where there wasn't a lot of slavery. The connection between slavery and support for secession and the Confederacy will become manifest. Some people will purchase books on southern resistance to the Confederacy.

Some people will be interested in looking up ancestors who resisted the Confederacy.

The neo-Confederate idea that South = Confederacy will lose a lot of credibility with the general public. The Lost Cause interpretation of the Civil War will also lose credibility with the general public.

Additionally, the neo-Confederates will be in a bind. If they publicly condemn the movie they will draw attention to it. If they don't oppose it the movie will still grind down the Lost Cause.

Poll: 29 percent of Mississippians would back a new Confederacy. Regarding the poll results and Jury duty.

The Sun Herald had an article about a recent poll taken of attitudes towards secession.

The question pollsters question was:

"If there were another Civil War today, would you side with the Confederate States of America or the United States of America?"

It was run by Public Policy Polling (PPP). It was asked of 691 Mississippians.

Of all Mississippians polled, 29% would back the Confederate States of America (CSA).

The article states that only 2% of African Americans would support the CSA. One can only imagine how the Sons of Confederate Veterans (SCV) would be interested in locating these African Americans to parade them around with a Confederate flag.

The article doesn't tell the statistics regarding white people in the U.S.A.

The article does break it down by party affiliation though.

Democrats: 82% for the USA and 9% for the CSA.
Republicans: 41% for the USA and 37% for the CSA.

What is astounding is that less than half the Republicans in Mississippi would support the USA.

Perhaps the whole point of this poll was to show that Republicans aren't that patriotic. As I have stated in earlier blog postings one of the Republicans regular political activities was to assert that the Democrats were somehow unpatriotic and the Republicans were more patriotic. When you have less than half of your supporters choose the USA your assertion of being more patriotic becomes absurd.

The results were further broken down by who people supported in the Republican primary.

For Thad Cochran supporters 61% chose the USA which I think is very low, but not surprising for a candidate that interviewed in Southern Partisan, 22% chose the CSA.

For Tea Party challenger McDaniels, 38% chose the USA and 37% chose the CSA. What is rather amazing is that 62% would choose the CSA or aren't sure that they would chose the USA.

I was not able to find a link to the poll results at the PPP website.

I think that in Mississippi screening out pro-CSA supporters from jury pools is a very reasonable activity. People who would choose the CSA should not be be jurors.

St. Andrew's Episcopal Cathedral of Jackson, MS hosts neo-Confederate function. Update:

The St. Andrew's Episcopal Cathedral of Jackson, MS hosted the 59th annual Children of the Confederacy (CofC) convention memorial service. The Children of the Confederacy is a youth group run by the United Daughters of the Confederacy (UDC) to indoctrinate their children in their neo-Confederate beliefs. It is open to both men and women.

They express many fine sentiments on their web page, but evidently it doesn't preclude assisting neo-Confederate groups.

I haven't yet compiled all the churches that hosted the national convention memorial services of the CofC. It is one of the compilations that I am going to work on.

I contacted them and they informed me that St. Andrew's Episcopal Cathedral isn't a breakaway church. So this isn't just an activity of breakaway Episcopal groups.

Dianna Freelon-Foster, former mayor of Grenada, a town in Evans' judicial district, pins the blame squarely on the district attorney: "I think he's a racist white supremacist," she says. Strong words, but Evans does have a history on race. In 1991, he delivered the keynote address at a Webster County meeting of the Council of Conservative Citizens, a neo-segregationist organization that opposes, according to its current mission statement, "all efforts to mix the races of mankind [and] to promote non-white races over the European-American people through so-called 'affirmative action.'" In 1992, Evans attended a CCC address delivered by Robert "Tut" Patterson, the notorious segregationist who founded the White Citizens Council to fight school desegregation. The CCC's newsletter reported Evans' attendance at both events. (Evans did not respond to Rolling Stone's request for comment for this story.)
