Jack Hunter had earlier asked his former "City Paper" editor to delete his columns. Editor refused. He calls Jack Hunter common type of racist, one who doesn't realize he is one.

This story is here:

http://www.theatlanticwire.com/politics/2013/07/rand-pauls-neo-confederate-aide-asked-his-editor-delete-columns/67344/

The editor says that he basically published Jack Hunter for amusement.

Haire says that while Hunter never said racial slurs or joined a lynching, "it was my opinion then and it is my opinion now that Jack is the most common kind of racist, the one that doesn’t realize that he is one." Which raises an interesting question, as The Washington Examiner's Philip Klein notes: If Hunter was such a racist, why did Haire publish him? In a way, Haire supports Hunter's own defense—that he was only saying this stuff because it sells. "The role of a radio host is different from that of a political operative. In radio, sometimes you’re encouraged to be provocative and inflammatory," Hunter said in a blog post. That apparently worked for the City Paper, too. Keep that in mind when you read about how the South has changed.

Some time ago I had suggested in a blog that Jack Hunter was being published for amusement by the City Paper.

http://newtknight.blogspot.com/2008/02/neo-confederate-ranter-columnist-for.html#.UekX2I2siSo

This got Jack Hunter quite upset and he denounced me in a YouTube video, which has been deleted, but he refers to it in his blog.

http://www.charlestoncitypaper.com/SouthernAvenger/archives/2008/02/27/neo-confederate-hunter-sebesta-responds-to-sa--with-even-more-elitism

It seems I was right all along as to why City Paper included Jack Hunter.

There is also this story at the City Paper is by his former editor and about Jack Hunter pointing out that his claims of youthful indiscretions doesn't hold up.

http://www.charlestoncitypaper.com/HaireoftheDog/archives/2013/07/18/former-editor-of-rand-pauls-neo-confederate-staffer-talks-about-the-southern-avenger

Now U.S. Senator Rand Paul and Jack Hunter are trying to represent Jack Hunter's Southern Avenger days as the efforts of a "shock jock" professional, which would validate exactly what I claimed then it was. He was being published for amusement.

I think the truth is that Jack Hunter believes then and now the same things and did take himself seriously. The editor didn't take him seriously and published him as a freak show to sell papers. When I pointed this out Jack Hunter was quite upset and I was supposed to be the bad guy for even thinking that. However, it turns out I was right all along.

Jack Hunter fooling around at "American Conservative" website. UPDATE

American Conservative has this article by Jack Hunter at their website.

http://www.theamericanconservative.com/articles/the-rights-race-deafness/?mc_cid=6c9d76b70d&mc_eid=3e97b81a9f

He is concerned that the conservative movement is coming across as anti-African American.  The following is the subtitle for the article.
"Too many conservatives give the impression that refusing to listen to black perspectives is a point of pride."
The article itself is good. It points out what is obvious to most people outside the conservative movement. The conservative movement is becoming reflexively anti-African American.

Hunter also admits that he was the Southern Avenger who was a character of inflammatory rhetoric.

I should as part of disclosure mention that he also denounced me. I had claimed that the Charleston alternatively weekly ran his material for entertainment, that is as a sort of freak show, to which he took great umbrage and denounced me as an elitist. It turns out later the editor of the paper admitted that they ran Jack Hunter's material for that purpose to provide entertainment. Hunter hasn't apologized to me. I am not sure I want him to do so or care if he did.

An earlier blog of mine reviews this history.

What I think is happening is that Jack Hunter is trying to live down his role as Southern Avenger and his prior career pandering to neo-Confederate sentiment.

Also, for this article to appear in the American Conservative is somewhat humorous.

This is the magazine that published Samuel Francis, a rabid racist. This is the magazine that publishes Patrick Buchanan, former Senior Advisor of Southern Partisan magazine  and contributor to Southern Partisan magazine, contributor to Chronicles magazine and member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans. I could mention others. Note to American Conservative, I have every single issue, so don't say I know nothing of the magazine. I collected every issue because I recognized so many names from my researches into the neo-Confederate movement.

UPDATE: One of the three founders of American Conservative is Taki Theodoracopulos. In my reading of his columns I see an outspoken and gleeful bigotry.

If one was against racism you wouldn't appear in American Conservative in the first place. Additionally all he is doing is providing cover for American Conservative magazine. For the American Conservative to be concerned that the conservative movement is pandering to racism is somewhat ludicrous. Who knows, perhaps Satan will denounce sin.

I wonder who Jack Hunter will be tomorrow?

U.S. Senator Rand Paul employs neo-Confederate Jack Hunter as his media director

For a while there the Republican Party leaders weren't associating with neo-Confederates. After Trent Lott's involvement with the Council of Conservative Citizens came to light and it turned out that much of the Republican Party leadership had interviewed in Southern Partisan magazine, the Republicans largely avoided the neo-Confederates.

However, it seems that U.S. Senator Rand Paul employs neo-Confederate Jack Hunter as his media director.

It is all over in the media.

The story first appeared in the conservative Washington Free Beacon and you can read the story at this link:

http://freebeacon.com/rebel-yell/

It is reported on in the media at these links:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/post-politics/wp/2013/07/09/rand-paul-aide-has-history-of-racial-comments/

http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/2013/07/09/rand-paul-staffer-southern-avenger/2502637/

Jack Hunter, aka Southern Avenger, comments about John Wilkes Booth and the assassination of Lincoln have gotten considerable commentary.

More amusing is this article, "Rand Paul can't understand why black voters don't vote GOP, here is a clue."

http://tv.msnbc.com/2013/07/09/rand-paul-cant-understand-why-black-voters-dont-vote-gop-heres-a-clue/

The article points out that the GOP and Rand Paul is not going to seem a very appealing choice when they are involved with neo-Confederate racists like Jack Hunter.

Like most neo-Confederates who are caught out, Hunter talks about how his views have changed. When these things come to light we get some excuse like, "Well that was 15 minutes ago, my views have changed."

The good thing about this, besides the fact that Rand Paul will likely dump Jack Hunter, is that all the other Republicans will be making sure they aren't hiring neo-Confederates or end up some how associated with neo-Confederates.

What may be acceptable in South Carolina may not be so acceptable in the rest of the country.

Another good thing is that an arrogant rodent is going to get his.

Jack Hunter resigns from his position as U.S. Senator Rand Paul staffer

Jack Hunter, AKA Southern Avenger, has resigned his position as a staffer for U.S. Senator Rand Paul.

This story is about some commentaries that Hunter was selling and were available on a CD. Several are put online.

http://freebeacon.com/the-confederacy-loses-again/

This story is about how Hunter's former editor for the Charleston City Paper isn't buying Hunter's claim that he left Paul's staff on his own to clear his name and not because Paul told him to go.

Halloween Special: "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter" a book even less believable than Thomas DiLorenzo's book.

I know that it is hard to believe that any book on Lincoln could be more unbelievable than Thomas DiLorenzo's book on Lincoln, but that just shows the limits of our imaginations. With "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter," I think you have to admit that the author has outdone DiLorenzo, though perhaps only marginally.

There is a new genre in which classics are rewritten as horror novels. For example there is the book, "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies" a rewrite of the Jane Austen novel. You can read about it here.

http://www.time.com/time/arts/article/0,8599,1889075,00.html

or this article:

http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/la-et-zombies4-2009apr04,0,4685367.story

Evidently the book is selling quite well and there is a bidding war for the movie rights. (Or a movie may be already be forthcoming since the above article was published.) So the author of "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies," Seth Grahame-Smith, wrote another book, "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter" which is selling well and its going to be made into a movie.

This is the "Los Angeles Times" article on it.

http://herocomplex.latimes.com/2010/03/05/abraham-lincoln-vampire-hunter/

The following URL is for an article about it being made into a movie.

http://www.movieweb.com/news/NExeLO9wCkfzAF

Evidently 20th Century Fox is scheduled to release the film June 22, 2012.

There is something hilarious about how this pseudo-history that is so fantastic and unbelievable. Perhaps Seth Grahame-Smith was inspired by reading neo-Confederate accounts of black Confederates and realized that the sky is the limit for invented history. After all if it can be claimed that Stonewall Jackson had two black battalions why not have Abraham Lincoln be a vampire hunter?

The book is evidently selling quite well and there is actually a trailer for the movie that is in the works. On Youtube it has had over 400,000 viewers. The URL is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X58RPS665V0. The YouTube version is larger than what I can fit into this blog.

In the book and the movie the Confederates are on the side of the vampires. Someone should alert the Sons of Confederate Veterans that there is a heritage violation.

It should be observed that this book is no more fantastical or outlandish than the claim put forth by the Sons of the Confederate Veterans that Abraham Lincoln was part of a communist conspiracy. I quote them here in another blog at this URL: http://newtknight.blogspot.com/2010/01/was-lincoln-communist-scv-neo.html

So Seth Grahame-Smith is only marginally, if at all, more fantastical than the Sons of Confederate Veterans writings of black Confederates, claims of a Communist Lincoln, and of course the usual claim that the Confederates didn't secede over slavery.

Happy Halloween, don't eat too many marshmallow pumpkins.

Update: This web page covers the other "Monster Mashups" of the classics and the horror genre. The titles are a hoot to read, such as "Little Women and Werewolves."

League of the South is deceived by "Duck Dynasty" Update:

One would think that the neo-Confederate League of the South (LOS) would have learned from the life of the Southern Avenger. When I first heard about the Southern Avenger, Jack Hunter, who had been formerly a professional wrestler, and was then a columnist for the Charleston City Paper in South Carolina, I saw him as an individual hired to basically entertain the readership of the paper as a freak.

To the LOS the Southern Avenger was a hero and I was an elitist to even think that the paper hired him as a freak show to amuse there readers. For the LOS references to him go to this link.  http://lsrebellion.blogspot.com/search?q=avenger.

Later it turned out that the editor for the Charleston City Paper explained that the Southern Avenger was hired exactly for the purpose as I had stated to amuse the readers as some sort of atavistic curiosity.

It also turned out that the Southern Avenger in an attempt to hold his job with U.S. Senator Rand Paul repudiated everything he had said as Southern Avenger. This disappointed the LOS as they explained in their blog postings. http://lsrebellion.blogspot.com/search?q=Jack+Hunter

So you would think they would have learned their lesson.  They haven't learned at all, this is LOS President Michael Hill's public announcement about the show Duck Dynasty. http://dixienet.org/rights/2013/phil_robertson.php

This concerns Phil Robertson's statements in an interview in Esquire magazine which have caused him to be suspended from the show Duck Dynasty by entertainment channel A&E.  This has gotten all of the American right wing in an uproar.

I had been vaguely aware of them by seeing articles about Duck Dynasty here and there, but haven't been much interested. Though their appearance called up certain stereotypes, I thought it was probably likely that off camera they could be quite different. I haven't seen a single episode, I don't watch TV and don't like reality TV.

However, with recent reporting I have gotten a sort of idea of what A&E was presenting in the show which is a cast of characters living and acting out a certain type of southern rural stereotypical existence. A&E were evidently doing very well with this show. The show avoided various statements about gay or racial minorities that would have gotten it into trouble.

What the LOS doesn't seem to comprehend is that Duck Dynasty is a product which is sold to make a lot of people a profit.

The Robertson's clan's role was to act out stereotypes on camera, but without saying things that would offend different groups. This way they could appeal to two different audiences. One would be those would identify with the Robertson clan or would want to be them and would assume they had additional attitudes about gays and minorities. The other audience would be those who wanted to watch them as a freak show and would assume likely they had certain attitudes about gays and minorities.

A&E could make money off both audiences without being seen as pandering to homophobia or racism. Everyone, Phil Robertson included, could have laughed all the way to the bank. His job description was to lead his family in living out stereotypes for the amusement of the viewers without getting A&E or the show in trouble.

This cartoon in the Los Angeles Times explains succinctly the purpose of the show.
http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/envelope/cotown/la-et-ct-horsey-on-hollywood-duck-dynasty-20131223,0,2345996.story#axzz2ohovKTPa

Evidently Phil Robertson didn't understand this, or perhaps he understood it all too well, and upset the whole arrangement by saying what he did in Esquire magazine. Suddenly A&E was at risk of seeming to have knowingly pandered to bigotry to make a dollar. Yes, the Duck Dynasty show does make money, but A&E has a lot of other shows also, and an ongoing brand image to maintain. So they suspended Phil Robertson. A&E would be irritated that he didn't understand his job description which should have been obvious to him.

I think Phil Robertson understood exactly what he was doing. He and his show has gotten a lot of media attention. Though I am not sure he has calculated very well. The reports are that other channels are interested. However, I am not sure mainstream media channels want to risk their brand image by picking him up in this type of situation. Also, media channels are likely to be wary of a product that might come with problems and a producer of that product who is reckless or doesn't care about his media partners. So Phil Robertson very well might find another channel but not one with the ability to promote his show or deliver audiences over the long term.

I tend to believe that Phil is sincere about his beliefs, he isn't making them up. According to reports when he was younger he was into drugs and excessive alcohol and his rigid religious faith keeps himself in line. Without it he might fall back into his old ways. He can't afford to have a flexible religion, things have to be a choice between heaven and hell, otherwise he might go to back to his prior habits before he found his current religious beliefs.

In the end though it is about selling a certain southern stereotype to the public for profit. If Phil hasn't figured this out, he will. The LOS is likely to be disappointed in the outcome when he does. When the LOS figures out that it is about selling a certain southern stereotype to the public for profit they might be embarrassed.

What is surprising is the the LOS loves Duck Dynasty but abhors Here Comes Honey Boo Boo. They really are the same thing.

UPDATE:

A&E has reinstated Phil Robertson. A&E have a lengthy statement of many nice sounding things. I think everyone involved decided that they needed to make lots of money.

"I was racist 15 minutes ago, but not now." The excuses of neo-Confederates

Jack Hunter is now alleging that he isn't the neo-Confederate of his Southern Avenger days. It is reported U.S. Senator Rand Paul is not going to terminate him.

Some articles on this are:

http://www.slate.com/blogs/weigel/2013/07/09/why_rand_paul_won_t_get_rid_of_his_neo_confederate_co_author.html

http://tv.msnbc.com/2013/07/11/rand-paul-defends-incredibly-talented-aide-despite-neo-confederate-ties/

This is what neo-Confederates do when discovered, they explain that they are no longer the same person. When Southern Partisan was in the news about their attacks on Martin Luther King they said that was their early years but they had changed. What had changed is that Martin Luther King birthday legislation was no longer in the news so it wasn't something they would report on.

Everyone does change over time and there is no way to read minds and see what people believe. So it is a very good rebuttal for neo-Confederates when their neo-Confederate past is discovered, "I was racist 15 minutes ago, but not now."

As some neo-Confederates find careers they find their documented neo-Confederate pasts liabilities, so they discover that they have changed.

However, I would ask Jack Hunter about what changed his mind about his neo-Confederate beliefs. What changed his mind about Lincoln or the Confederacy? Probably the only thing you would find is that he found his beliefs career limiting.

Politicized Sons of Confederate Veterans disagree with President Obama about secession as part of a political agenda

The pretense that the Sons of Confederate Veterans are some type of historical remembrance organization instead of a political organization with reactionary political agenda is demolished with Sons of Confederate Veterans (SCV) Commander-in-Chief (C-i-C) R. Michael Givens' recent editorial about Obama's rejection of the secession petitions.

In the March/April 2012 Confederate Veteran, pages 4,5, 24, official publication of the SCV, the "Report of the Commander-in-Chief" by R. Michael Givens is a political editorial.

After an initial paragraph about his parents visiting him in Los Angeles, Givens' first complaint is "Hollywood has recently lambasted us with two major motion pictures featuring the antics of Abraham Lincoln (one only slightly more whimsical than the other)," and "The Country has enthusiastically embraced the false notion of Lincoln's benevolence ad nauseum and swallowed the propaganda dawg -- head, legs, and all." (Italics in the original.)

The two movies I think he is referring to is Spielberg's Lincoln and the movie, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter.

Further he is dismayed that a relative, a retired school teacher, who he regarded as "Southern to the core," very much liked the recent Lincoln movie and had a negative reaction when he tried to explain the neo-Confederate view of Lincoln.

This acceptance of Lincoln is to Givens a symptom of "Aesculaparian proportions," and writes, "I am personally beginning to embrace the mindset that we are dealing with a disease." This disease he sees as turning the nation away from liberty.

He also asks, "Have I become merely a crotchety old man who sees the sun approaching the horizon, still hoping for better days for my children?". His answer, "No, I think not."  Some of the readers of this blog may beg to differ with Givens.

Givens then gets to the theme of his editorial, "Since the defeat of 1865, every imaginable and unimaginable Marxist experiment has been pressed upon the American people," which he sees as having been forewarned by Jefferson Davis in 1881, quoting him "'.... the contest is not over, the strife is not ended. It has only entered upon a new and enlarged arena'" and "'The principle for which we contend is bound to reassert it's self, though it may be at another time and in another form."

Given then refers to reports by the Conservative Heritage Foundation, WorldAudit.org, and Reporters Without Boarders to assert that the United States has suffered a major loss of freedom.

Now I am not going to express any opinion regarding freedom in the United States. It isn't an area where I have expertise and it isn't relevant to the point of this blog posting. I do think it is a nearly universally held view that being concerned and protective of constitutional freedoms and freedoms in generally is a good thing, though exactly what they are is often disagreed upon.

The point is that Givens' and the SCV can't claim to be non-partisan, or a non-partisan group eligible for special tax considerations or to be a charity. Givens' editorial isn't about the Civil War, or historical remembrance but is a political editorial. Certainly anyone has a right to write a political editorial, but in writing a political and publishing it in the Confederate Veteran, the SCV can no longer claim to be non-partisan.

The SCV has become a reactionary political organization. I question whether it should be an eligible charity for the Combined Federal Campaign, the charitable fundraising organization for government employees.

Then leading into a discussion of the secession petitions Givens' writes, "The power-hungry elite will certainly continue to push their agenda, but the repressed will just as certainly reach a saturation point and begin to resist." This is the context Given's gives for the secession petitions writing, "Before this new push to eliminate liberty," referring to gun control proposals, "petitions from every state in the union were sent tot he White House requesting the right to secede."

Given's rejects that the Union is perpetual and the White House's arguments against secession, in particular not caring for their quotation of Lincoln.

Given's then in his essay defines the purpose of the SCV as to pursue a specific neo-Confederate political agenda, that is the purpose of the SCV is to be a neo-Confederate political organization pursing a neo-Confederate political agenda. Givens' explains he isn't advocating secession, but that he sees present political controversies as being the same as those in the Civil War:

... but my head would be deep in the sand if I did not recognize that President Davis' words have proven quite prophetic. The contest is not over; the strife has not ended. Whether it's the Tea Party or the recent petitions, the fight is the same: Liberty.
With that asserted Givens' defines the Charge to the Sons of Confederate by Stephen D. Lee, a document which is held up by the SCV as to their entire purpose, as defining the SCV as a conservative political action organization. Givens' writes:

I firmly believe the ideals fo the Sons of Confederate Veterans and the cause as spelled out in our Charge are the very definition of patriotism. I am proud of our Confederate ancestors and pray that our own posterity will know we did our duty, and we, like our Confederate forefathers, never crouched down or licked a hand. ... But as the 19th-century pastor Charles Spurgeon put it. "Praying without working is a bow without a string ... If the the man desired that which he pretends to pray for, he would be eager to labour for it."
In short, true SCV members, who are worthy of their Confederate ancestors, will fight for a conservative agenda and that is the agenda of the SCV.

Kevin Levin reveals his true self

Kevin Levin wrote a blog posting titled, "The Lost Cause is not fake history," and the link to the post is:

http://cwmemory.com/2016/12/30/the-lost-cause-is-not-fake-history/

His posting was in response to this CNN article and video. http://www.cnn.com/2016/12/28/us/lost-cause-trump/index.html

Levin is not happy over this CNN article. Levin writes:

No, the Lost Cause is not an example of fake history. Postwar accounts of loyal slaves and benevolent slaveowners were quite consistent with pre-war accounts. The Lost Cause was not a collective act of self deception or even primarily an attempt to deceive others. It was an organic process of reflection and memory that directly engaged the most pressing challenges of the immediate postwar period, including defeat, emancipation, black mobility and black political action to name just a few.
He followed up with this blog posting "to clarify" what he was trying to say.

http://cwmemory.com/2016/12/31/why-the-lost-cause-is-not-fake-history/

The blog postings really reveal who Levin is.

The Lost Cause depiction of slavery, the Civil War and Reconstruction was not confined to a few Confederate leaders. The Lost Cause was promoted by the United Confederate Veterans, United Daughters of the Confederacy and the Sons of Confederate Veterans.

These are the comments in a letter by Confederate John S. Mosby, the famous "Gray Ghost," of the Civil War. He is "disgusted" by the Lost Cause lies about the Civil War and the Confederacy. In a letter he wrote to a friend in June 4, 1907 he comments about the Lost Cause lies.

I wrote you about my disgust at reading the Reunion speeches: It has since been increased by reading Christians report. I am certainly glad I wasn’t there. According to Christian the Virginia people were the abolitionists & the Northern people were pro-slavery. He says slavery was “a patriarchal” institution – So were polygamy & circumcision. Ask Hugh if he has been circumcised. Christian quotes what the Old Virginians – said against slavery. True; but why didn’t he quote what the modern Virginians said in favor of it – Mason, Hunter, Wise &c. Why didn’t he state that a Virginia Senator (Mason) was the author of the Fugitive Slave law – & why didn’t he quote The Virginia Code (1860) that made it a crime to speak against slavery, or to teach a negro to read the Lord’s prayer. Now while I think as badly of slavery as Horace Greeley did I am not ashamed that my family were slaveholders. It was our inheritance – Neither am I ashamed that my ancestors were pirates & cattle thieves. People must be judged by the standard of their own age. If it was right to own slaves as property it was right to fight for it. The South went to war on account of Slavery. South Carolina went to war – as she said in her Secession proclamation – because slavery wd. not be secure under Lincoln. South Carolina ought to know what was the cause for her seceding. . . . I am not ashamed of having fought on the side of slavery – a soldier fights for his country – right or wrong – he is not responsible for the political merits of the cause he fights in. The South was my country.

Of course Mosby has his own rationalizations, but he wasn't going to fill himself with stuff and nonsense that the Civil War wasn't about slavery.

Frederick Douglas denounced the Lost Cause as deception and so did W.E.B. Dubois.

https://www.facinghistory.org/resource-library/web-dubois-reflects-purpose-history

Kevin Levin is of the Civil War Tables era of Civil War historiography. He also very well might become the new Eugene Genovese of Civil War history. As the Civil War Round Table Civil War history passes away I think we will see more postings like this from Levin.

Southern Avenger's serious interest in professional wrestling. Avenger's further response to my idea that he might be on the papers staff for laughs.

Southern Avenger has this item as one of his latest blog entries.

http://southernavenger.ccpblogs.com/2008/03/01/multiculturalism-in-practice/

He thinks it is hilarious, but I am sure he will be outraged that I think it just reveals his neo-Confederate racism. (His blog is at http://southernavenger.ccpblogs.com/)

Southern Avenger did another blog continuing his theme that I am elitist. This time it was because I couldn't imagine him as merely being on the staff of the paper for his ideas.

http://southernavenger.ccpblogs.com/2008/02/27/neo-confederate-hunter-sebesta-responds-to-sa-with-even-more-elitism/

All I can say is come off your soap box. The name of your blog and column is "Southern Avenger." It isn't Southern Conservative, Southern Heritage, Southern Viewpoint, or some other name, it is "Southern Avenger." Some people who read the Charleston City Paper are reading you for amusement.

This is a few of the articles that run in the paper:

http://www.charlestoncitypaper.com/gyrobase/Content?oid=oid%3A40632

http://www.charlestoncitypaper.com/gyrobase/Content?oid=oid%3A41002

http://www.charlestoncitypaper.com/gyrobase/Content?oid=oid%3A40987

I am sure to the readers of these articles the Southern Avenger is delightful local color. Perhaps they will talk about him at the arts and wine festival or at Starbucks after seeing an art house movie.

Questions for H.K. Edgerton. Hopefully he will answer them if he comes to Richmond UPDATED.

H.K. Edgerton is an African American member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans (SCV) who goes about defending the Confederacy. I have for him the following question which I hope to present to him in Richmond. UPDATE: See the two questions added at the end.

QUESTIONS FOR H.K. EDGERTON

1.       Jefferson Davis, a Confederate hero to the Sons of Confederate Veterans in his history “The Rise and Fall of the Confederate Government,” published in 1881 by D. Appleton & Co., New York, in Vol. 2 pp. 600, in his condemnation of the Emancipation Proclamation, Jefferson Davis in his book reprints his proclamation of January 1863:

“A proclamation, dated on January 1, 1863, signed and issued by the President of the United States, orders and declares all slaves within ten of the States of the Confederacy to be free, except as are found in certain districts now occupied in part by the armed forces of the enemy. We may well leave it to the instinct of that common humanity, which a beneficent Creator has implanted in the breasts of our fellow-men of all countries, to pass judgment on a measure by which several millions of human beings of an inferior race -- peaceful, contented laborers in their sphere -- are doomed to extermination, while at the same time they are encouraged to a general assassination of their masters by the insidious recommendation "to abstain from violence, unless in necessary self-defense."

QUESTION: Do you think African Americans are an inferior race or would be contented with slavery?

2.      Jefferson Davis, in his history, “The Rise and Fall of the Confederate Government,” published in 1881 by D. Appleton & Co., New York, in Vol. 2 pp. 161, in anger at Abraham Lincoln's joy at the enlistment of African Americans into the U.S. Army Davis states:

Let the reader pause for a moment and look calmly at the facts presented in this statement. The forefathers of these negro soldiers were gathered from the torrid plains and malarial swamps of inhospitable Africa. Generally they were born the slaves of barbarian masters, untaught in all the useful arts and occupations, reared in heathen darkness, they were transferred to shores enlightened by the rays of Christianity. There, put to servitude, they were trained in the gentle arts of peace and order and civilization; they increased from a few unprofitable savages to millions of efficient Christian laborers. Their servile instincts rendered them contented with their lot, and their patient toil blessed the land of their abode with unmeasured riches.

QUESTION: Do you think African Americans have servile instincts?

3.      Robert E. Lee, a Confederate hero to the Sons of Confederate Veterans, in a letter to Andrew Hunter in Jan. 11, 1865 writes the following.

DEAR SIR: I have received your letter of the 7th inst., and, without confining myself to the order of your interrogatories, will endeavor to answer them by a statement of my views on the subject. I shall be most happy if I can contribute to the solution of a question in which I feel an interest commensurate with my desire for the happiness of our people. Considering the relation of master and slavery, controlled by humane laws and influenced by Christianity and an enlightened public sentiment, as the best that can exist between the white and black races while intermingled as at present in this country, I would deprecate any sudden disturbance of that relation unless it be necessary to avert a greater calamity to both. I should therefore prefer to rely upon our white population to preserve the ratio between our forces and those of the enemy which experience has shown to be safe. But in view of the preparations of our enemies it is our duty to provide for continued war, and not for a battle or campaign, and I fear that we cannot accomplish this without overtaxing the capacity of our white population. Should the war continue under existing circumstances, the enemy may in course of time penetrate our country and get access to a large part of our negro population. It is his avowed policy to convert the able-bodied men among them into soldiers, and to emancipate all. [ The letter is from “Memoranda on the Civil War,” pages 600-601, The Century Illustrated Monthly Magazine, Vol. 36 No. 4, August 1888. Also, “The War of the Rebellion: A Compilation of the Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies,” (Washington, D.C.: Government Printing Office, 1880–1901), series 4, vol. 3, 1012–1013.]

QUESTION: Do you think that any form of slavery could be the best relation that can exist between whites and African Americans?

4.      Robert E. Lee, in testimony before the Reconstruction Committee of Congress testified that he thought Virginia would be better off if Virginia could get rid of all the African Americans in the state?  [“Report of the Joint Committee on Reconstruction,” of congress, pages 135-136, testimony of Robert E. Lee before the Congressional Joint Committee on Reconstruction in response to questions by Mr. Blow, on February 17, 1866.]

QUESTION: Do you think Virginia would be better off without African Americans?

5. In the Sept./Oct. 2003 Southern Mercury, a publication of an educational PAC of the Sons of Confederate Veterans,  Frank Conner has an white supremacist article “Where We Stand Now: And How We Got Here.” In it, African Americans are asserted to have low IQs, a fact which Conner asserts has been covered up by a liberal conspiracy. In a section of his article titled, “Liberals Create a False Public Image of the Blacks,” Conner writes:

Previously, anthropologists had routinely recorded the notable differences in IQ among the races; but at Columbia, a liberal cultural anthropologist named Franz Boas now changed all of that. He decreed that there were no differences in IQ among the races, and the only biological differences between the blacks and white were of superficial nature. The liberals swiftly made it academically suicidal to challenge Boas’ flat assertion. Meanwhile, the liberals in the media heaped special praise upon black athletes, musicians, singers, and writers – and treated them as typical of the black race. The liberals were creating a false image of the blacks in America as a highly competent people who were being held back by the prejudiced white southerners. [Conner, Frank, “Where We Stand Now: And How We Got Here,” Southern Mercury, Vol. 1 No. 2, pages 10-14, quote on page 12.]

QUESTIONS: Do you think African Americans have lower intelligence that whites? Why was Frank Conner allowed to write this for Southern Mercury rather than being expelled from the Sons of Confederate Veterans?

6. QUESTION: Is Robert E. Lee your hero?

7. QUESTION: Is Jefferson Davis your hero?

U.S. Senator Rand Paul on Lincoln , is the GOP the party of Lincoln or Jefferson Davis?

U.S. Senator Rand Paul has shared his thoughts on Lincoln in response to the Jack Hunter controversy.

It is reported in this article online:

http://www.salon.com/2013/07/11/rand_paul_completely_mangles_lincoln/

Trent Lott explained to an interviewer for the Southern Partisan how the Republican Party was now the party of Jefferson Davis.

Is neo-Confederacy like a rising dampness, penetrating the conservative movement? Or is it an ideology that occasionally shows up in the conservative movement, but for which there is no general trend of neo-Confederacy being adopted by the conservative movement.

It might be that either scenario is a  current possibility and the conservative movement, if it wishes not to be neo-Confederate needs to take strong measures to prevent that from happening.

"Django Unchained": Neo-Confederates hate it and they should

I saw Django Unchained last weekend at the movie theater. It was basically a spaghetti western in many ways. There were numerous anachronistic elements in the film which I ignored.

The movie had two strongly expressed messages: (1) Antebellum slavery was horrific. (2) Antebellum slave owners and slave traders were criminal lowlifes worthy of being shot down like rabid dogs.

The horrors of slavery are made clear in the movie. Racists are portrayed as intellectual idiots. Slavers and slave owners get what's coming to them in the movie, mostly being shot dead when not being dynamited. The plantation house of a sadistic slave owner is blown up completely in the end.

Jamie Foxx, who plays Django, triumphs over white supremacists.

This has gotten the neo-Confederates up in arms and they are leading campaigns against the movie. They are using the strategy of attacking Tarantino personally. Representing the film as some anti-white racist film which it isn't. Django's good friend and partner in the movie is a German immigrant dentist named Dr. King Schultz turned bounty hunter who is favorably portrayed as Django's good friend.

The real opposition to the movie is that it is a complete rejection of Lost Cause mythology about slavery before the Civil War. More importantly it isn't some sentimental pacifistic rejection of slavery weeping over the horrors of slavery and wishing couldn't we all be nicer people in history. It is a film which sees slave holders as worthy as being shot dead as criminals.

Some links:

The League of the South had this comment. Their blogger uses sarcasm and name calling when he doesn't really have anything to say.

http://lsrebellion.blogspot.com/2012/12/scary-jamie.html

The Council of Conservative Citizens (CofCC) has these postings:

http://topconservativenews.com/2012/12/boycott-django-unchained/

http://topconservativenews.com/2012/12/quentin-tarantino-loves-rape-porn/

Any assertion made in any CofCC posting has to be taken with a grain of salt. The story line is explained in the movie as being a parallel to the German mythological story of Brunhilde and Siegfried. Django saves his lost love from monsters. Django isn't out to get all white people but the slave owners who oppress, in particular his love.

However, facts don't weigh much with neo-Confederates who are delusional and hysterical regarding race.

What upsets the neo-Confederates is that there is emerging a public which doesn't accept the Lost Cause view of slavery at all and really regards slave holders as criminals.

National Civil War Museum, teach your child a neo-Confederate view of history

One of the books I purchased at the National Civil War Museum is, "Who Was Robert E. Lee?" It is by Bonnie Bader with a cover illustration by Nancy Harrison. The interior illustrations are by John O'Brian. The book is published by Grossett & Dunlap, an imprint of Penguin Books and it meant to children.

Slavery is mentioned. There is a section on Robert E. Lee's views on slavery. We learn that:

"Some historians say that Robert E. Lee was against slavery." And we are told that, "... other historians say that Robert E. Lee did not object to slavery."

The section concludes with, "Robert thought that the only one to decide to free the slaves should be god." An interesting spin on this letter by Lee.

Of course Lee made it abundantly clear that he thought slavery was best for African Americans. In an 1865 letter by Lee to Andrew Hunter Lee writes:
“Considering the relation of master and slave, controlled by humane laws and influenced by Christianity and an enlightened public sentiment, as the best that can exist between the white and black races while intermingled as at present in this country, I would depreciate any sudden disturbance of that relation unless it be necessary to avert a greater calamity to both.”

There was a slave hunt where African Americans in Pennsylvania were rounded up and taken as slaves.

http://www.post-gazette.com/news/state/2013/06/30/Confederates-slave-hunt-in-North-a-military-disgrace/stories/201306300221?pgpageversion=pgevoke

Finally the book discusses Lee being a university president after the Civil War but not his hostility to African Americans as documented by Robert E. Lee Jr., testimony to the congressional committee on Reconstruction, and Lee's infamous White Sulphur Manifesto.

This book is the equivalent of Holocaust denial.

For information about what Robert E. Lee said and believed you can go to this website and use the search term "Robert." http://www.confederatepastpresent.org

This museum in promoting this book commits an outrage against the humanity of African Americans. It is no wonder that it proves to be a challenge in America to have people recognize truly that Black lives matter.

Is Southern Avenger calling me politically incorrect?

That is essentially what Southern Avenger is doing. I am pointing out the possibility that Southern Avenger is a new Joe Bog Briggs for the Charleston City Paper, and in response, besides some gratuitous name calling, he is calling me elitist.

There is yet another blog by the Southern Avenger on my assertion that he is possibly hired as a colorful character for the amusement of the Charleston City Paper.

http://southernavenger.ccpblogs.com/2008/03/04/neo-confederate-hunter-sebestas-elitism-continues/

Southern Avenger writes:

Regardless, Sebesta’s latest blog suggests that the Charleston City Paper only publishes my stuff (and CP readers only read it) for pure amusement. His proof is that the CP also features articles on the arts and wine tasting - cosmopolitan tastes, worlds apart apparently, from the redneck diatribes of “da Suthern Avingerr.” Woodoggies!

However, in my blog I made no such claim that these interests are worlds apart.
http://newtknight.blogspot.com/2008/03/southern-avengers-serious-interest-in.html

What I do claim is that people who are engaged in these things often, though not always, think that these things are worlds apart. In regards to art galleries, expensive resturants, the people interested are often, though not always, are young professionals with various roles relating to class status which can be enacted through various activities. They may not be at all conscious of it, but it is true. Modern consumerism is about purchasing identities through the purchase of a style of clothes, cars, wine, art, etc. It may be politically incorrect to point this out, but the readers of The Charleston City Paper can be understood to some extent from the advertising and articles directed towards them.

In the 19th century, one Southern magazine, either the "Southern Review" or "Southern Magazine," I think it was the later, had a serial with a fictional speaker with heavily dialectical language, colorful and comical speaking, speak on the Civil War and other things. I think Moses Adams was the characters name, but when he spoke it it was spelled Mozas Adums or some such thing. Southern publications have been doing this for some time. It is nothing new. Maybe Southern Avenger is continuing a southern tradition.

Publications do parade around some fictional characters or real people in their publications thinking it will amuse their readers.

Evidently, it is politically incorrect for me to bring up that publications do this. That the alternative weeklies have a readership that would like to think they are avant guard, chic, cool, hip or whatever and these readerships might find Southern Avenger amusing.

Finally, I never said Southern Avenger was a redneck. My paper on banal white nationalism specifically points out the problems with such stereotypes. http://www.templeofdemocracy.com/breaking.htm

Let me see, Southern Avenger episode No. 101, in the last episode, Pauline Pureheart was being cornered by Bart Blackheart, when the Southern Avenger spoke out, "Never fear, Miss Pureheart, I am here to save you." "My hero, replies Pauline Pureheart."

Like I said, who is kidding who?

Letter to the Historic Richmond Foundation

The Historic Richmond Foundation unfortunately lent their Monumental Church to the United Daughters of the Confederacy (UDC) in 2014. The Richmond Free Press ran an article on the story.

http://richmondfreepress.com/news/2014/nov/07/confederates-hold-service-downtown-church/

This is my certified letter in 2015 asking them not to lend the church to the Sons of Confederate Veterans (SCV). I also discuss their lending their facilities to the UDC and the irresponsibility of doing so.

I copied it extensively using proof of mailing.. I think that they won't lend their facilities to the SCV for the reason is that it is bad publicity.

Dear Ms. Hogue:

Please find enclosed a copy of the Richmond Free Press article about your allowing the neo-Confederate group, the United Daughters of the Confederacy (UDC), to Monumental Church at their annual national convention in 2014 and your responses. [Matthews, Joey, “Confederates to hold service at Downtown church,” Richmond Free Press, Vol. 23, No. 45, Nov. 6-8, 2014, pages A1, A14.] It is available online at:

Also, please find enclosed an article published in Black Commentator about the Sons of Confederate Veterans (SCV) which I think to any reasonable person documents their racism and extremism. It is also available online at:

I am an investigative researcher regarding the neo-Confederate movement. I have had two books published by university presses and articles in peer-reviewed academic journals. I enclose a copy of my online curriculum vitae which is also online at http://templeofdemocracy.com/curriculum-vitae.html. Additionally there have been other articles published at Black Commentator also accessible from my online curriculum vitae.

In addition to my research I am also an activist. My recent concern is the enabling of neo-Confederate organizations by mainstream institutions. In 2013 I got major corporations to stop donating to the SCV through the We Care website. After learning that they were supporting the SCV major corporations started contacting We Care and in a matter of days We Care dropped the SCV. You can read about this campaign at Black Commentator at this URL:

After getting major corporations to stop supporting neo-Confederate groups I have been writing churches asking them not to enable neo-Confederate groups. It hasn’t been entirely unsuccessful so far, but I have found that the temples of Mammon were much more willing than the churches of Christ not to support neo-Confederate organizations.

The Sons of Confederate Veterans are planning to have their 2015 national convention in Richmond, Virginia.  You can read about it at this website: http://www.jebstuartcamp.org/jebstuartcamp.org/2015reunion/.

I am writing you to make two requests:

1)   Do not allow the Sons of Confederate Veterans to use any of your facilities for their 2015 national convention or for any other activity either now or in the future.

2)   Do not allow any other neo-Confederate organization, including the United Daughters of the Confederacy, to use your facilities for their activities either now or in the future.

The United Daughters of the Confederacy has a lengthy history of supporting white supremacy going back to the early 20th century shortly after they had finished organizing. You can see many primary historical documents regarding their racial attitudes at www.confederatepastpresent.org and use the search term “daughters.”

However, I think documentation shows that these racial attitudes are not confined to the past. This is an organization that currently runs a Red Shirt Shrine to glorify a violent white supremacist group in 19th century South Carolina and of which they are proud of as documented in the June/July 2001 UDC Magazine article, pages 23, 24, and the cover of their magazine. In an article in the Dec. 2012 UDC Magazine, pages 11-14, is an appalling racist article in which the infamous post-Civil War Black Codes of the former Confederate states are defended, African American men are represented as having been potential rapists, the 14th Amendment to the Constitution is argued to be misguided, freed African Americans are asserted to have been incompetent to be citizens. The article asserts, “Newly liberated Negroes were not prepared for their freedom…” These are but two contemporary examples of the UDC’s attitudes towards race. Documentation enclosed.

In allowing neo-Confederate groups you make yourself an enabler of their agenda which in regarding race is clearly documented by their own record.

Another question raised by your allowing the UDC to use Monumental Church in 2014 is whether the Historic Richmond Foundation’s purpose is to construct a racialized landscape, or more precisely a white racial landscape.

The question is whether your efforts serve to construct Richmond, Virginia as a Confederate theme park, a Confederate capitol of the imagination, or otherwise stated a sacred place of a metaphysical Confederacy with your buildings are points of pilgrimage by neo-Confederates and others would are perhaps “Gone With the Wind,” who dream of the Confederacy. It doesn’t really matter whether the Historic Richmond Foundation does this on purpose, ignorance or with reckless indifference.

In the August 2014 issue of UDC Magazine, page 19 there is the following section on the use of Monumental Church for their national convention in Richmond (documentation enclosed):

Newly-restored Monumental Church, designed by Robert Mills and opened in 1814, almost pre-dates Richmond’s founding. Newly restored to its original appearance, this was the church of Chief Justice Marshall. Many events of Confederate history passed its doors during the War years. [Bold face added.]

As you can see the UDC saw the use of this church as an opportunity to imagine the Confederacy. You did allow the work of the Historic Richmond Foundation to be used in the imagining of Richmond as the capitol of the Confederacy, to be a Confederate theme park, a Confederate fantasyland. I think that it would be obvious that they would do this, it is not like their purpose is secret. Their purpose is clearly in their name.

Jonathan Leib in his chapter “The Witting Autobiography of Richmond Virginia: Arthur Ashe, the Civil War, and Monument Avenue’s Racialized Landscape,” in the book, points out that:

As a former capital of the Confederate States of America, Richmond’s landscape has the densest concentration of memorials to the Confederacy of any large Southern city, ranging from a sixty-foot-tall monument to Robert E. Lee to a downtown street named after his horse Traveller. [From page 188, Chapter 10, “Landscape and Race in the United States,” edited by Richard H. Schein, publisher Routledge, 2006 (New York)]

The chapter discusses how the landscape through monuments and other efforts worked to construct the Richmond landscape as a white landscape and support values of white supremacy and how the controversy over the Arthur Ashe monument made this explicit and obvious.

An organization which hoped to contribute to a modern American city, the type of city which strives to value all members of society regardless of race and to be an inclusive multi-racial democracy, would certainly not support neo-Confederate groups or identifying with the pro-slavery and pro-white supremacist Confederacy.

Any restoration work in such a Confederate saturated landscape as is Richmond’s would seem to require care by any organization concerned with not perpetuating a white landscape. Yet your comments in the Richmond Free Press article reveal a total indifference to the issues of landscape and race and an arrogant refusal to recognize that you are aiding neo-Confederates and a racial agenda.

The president of the Historic Richmond Foundation, Andrew K. Clark, is a donor to the Museum of the Confederacy. This raises the question as to whether the Historic Richmond Foundation really has any real concerns not to embrace Richmond’s Confederate past as an ideal.

In particular I wish point out one of your statements. “I don’t know much about their organization,” in reference to the United Daughters of the Confederacy. They have a substantial building as their national headquarters in Richmond, Virginia. As I stated earlier, their purpose is clearly stated in their name, United Daughters of the Confederacy, they exist to honor an attempt to form a state to defend slavery from emancipation and to preserve white supremacy.

If the Historic Richmond Foundation is irresponsible regarding race and the landscape and neo-Confederate groups, then I think that it is obvious that the Historic Richmond Foundation works towards ill for the city of Richmond and works to restore more than buildings from the past, but also racial attitudes form the past.

Further for those who choose to support the Historic Richmond Foundation if the Foundation’s practice continues to preserve racial attitudes from the past and enable neo-Confederate groups they reveal their real racial attitudes and are pernicious undermining civil rights. Businesses who support the Historical Richmond Foundation, when the foundation practice is such, certainly bring into question any personnel policies they have for the work place regarding non-discrimination.

I ask you to avoid preserving past racial attitudes when you preserve buildings and to not support neo-Confederate groups by allowing them the use of your facilities for their activities.

                                                          Sincerely Yours,

                                                          Edward H. Sebesta

[NOTE: I sent copies of this letter to the staff of the Historic Richmond Foundation, NOT the staff of the Museum of the Confederacy as indicated in this CC.
