Secession and Gun Control, or "That was fast!"

In this earlier Feb. 2018  blog posting I concluded that I thought the ignition point to get secession movements going was likely to be the passage of gun control legislation.

https://newtknight.blogspot.com/2018/02/status-of-texas-secession-secessionists.html#.Wsigt4jBqiO

The comment about gun control was at the very end.  It is part of a lengthy assessment of the status of the Texas secessionists. To give a very brief assessment, the Texas secessionists aren't going to gain any traction as long as Trump is in office and the Republicans control the government.

I blogged about a news article about secession and gun control March 27, 2018.

https://newtknight.blogspot.com/2018/03/liberal-left-is-noticing-secession-and.html#.WsihuIjBqiM

A left/liberal website Think Progress reported on some fringe elements advocating secession to prevent gun control. This is the link to their article.

https://thinkprogress.org/why-do-these-patriots-hate-america-ec1a093a8df6/

So I saw a developing idea among fringe elements. Maybe some time some where this would have consequences. I was really surprised that the issue of gun control and secession would find its way into state legislatures this fast with the introduction of a bill into the South Carolina legislature calling for secession if there is federal gun control legislation.

http://thehill.com/homenews/state-watch/382003-south-carolina-house-republicans-introduce-bill-to-consider-secession

http://www.thestate.com/news/politics-government/politics-columns-blogs/the-buzz/article208132169.html

It became an Associated Press story.

Reminds me of the statement by South Carolinian James L. Petigru that South Carolina in 1860 was too small to be a republic but too large to be an insane asylum.

From the AP article we learn the following:

A trio of state House Republicans on Thursday quietly introduced a bill that would allow lawmakers to debate seceding from the U.S. "if the federal government confiscates legally purchased firearms in this State."
The chief sponsor is Rep. Mike Pitts who contradictorily also says:
Pitts, a longtime law officer and Army veteran, said his bill isn't a call for secession but merely a proposal to make the action possible if events warrant.

"I'm not promoting secession. I served this country, and I don't want to see it broken up."
I think this shows that Pitts thinks that secession is a little out there as an idea or perhaps he doesn't have coherent thinking.

However, this puts the idea in the news for both South Carolina and in North Carolina where the story was covered in the Charlotte Observer.  https://www.charlotteobserver.com/news/state/south-carolina/article208132169.html  The story is identical to the article in The State.

It has gotten national coverage in the media and with the Internet the secession proposal in South Carolina can be accessed by a national audience.

Perhaps this is the next ultra position to show that you are really a strong supporter on gun control. Or maybe it isn't. It could be that the Republican leadership is ready to severely criticize the three Republican legislators. Or it could be that some other Republican legislators will join the effort to make sure they don't lose the next Republican primary. Or it could be both. I think I have covered all the possibilities there.

However, the fact that this is proposed at all is cause for concern. We don't hear calls for the resignation of these three Republicans by the Republican leadership.

It is another incremental step forward in the normalization of secession. A little here and a little there secession continues to be normalized.

The attitude of the media has been bemusement. The history of secession is that it seems comical or outlandish until it isn't.

Any political movement, anything new, starts first with imagining it. At this point we have secession being imagined. We don't have the imagining of the consequences, just some idealized fantasy of secession. I don't see any anti-secession movement getting people imagining the consequences. There is just bemusement.

There needs to be conceptualized some anti-secession strategies with some group having some ongoing focus on preventing secession. That way when a body of ideas is needed they will be developed and there will be something better than some slogan like, "Better Together." (Used in opposition to Scottish secession.)

The fundamental problem in getting people to take secession seriously is that people think that nations are composed of some solid material, maybe concrete, and indestructible. The reality is that nations are imagined and are composed of dreams. Once the dream is gone, the nations may have all the apparatuses of state power, but as imposing as they may seem, a nation dependent on them alone, and not the support of the general population is in a desperate situation.

The collapse of the Soviet Union should have taught the public that. It hasn't. The secessionists however, were quick learners regarding this. The neo-Confederate Kennedy twins discussed the Soviet Union in their second edition of "The South Was Right!" Other secessionists noticed.

Also, I fear that if secession starts getting some traction the opposition to it will be blunt and unthinking and act to enable secession. Opposition to secession needs to be grounded in the field of cultural geography and that field's understanding of nationalism. The reliance on force will be a losing strategy.

However, at this point secession has moved forward just an increment. Perhaps I can't really believe that this is going anywhere. Even to myself it seems outlandish. However, I think that it might turn out to be very real and a great danger.

Dallas' Black Confederate Monument

There has been a lot of attention and ridicule paid to an effort by two Republican South Carolina legislators to have a monument to Black Confederates.

https://www.theroot.com/sc-republicans-want-to-build-stupidest-confederate-monu-1821710469

https://thegrio.com/2017/12/29/black-confederate-soliders-south-carolina-republicans/

https://www.alternet.org/news-amp-politics/republican-lawmakers-surprised-learn-no-black-soldiers-served-under-confederacy

https://www.rawstory.com/2017/12/sc-republicans-try-to-sneak-confederate-propaganda-into-classrooms-with-memorial-to-black-civil-war-vets/

Of course the real point of this effort is to legitimize the Confederacy.

This effort for a monument didn't come out of no where. There has been an effort to promote this mythology in 2017 in South Carolina.

https://www.aikenstandard.com/news/family-of-african-american-confederate-veteran-of-salley-accepts-statehouse/article_56060e74-fa11-11e6-8923-0ba00a5347b5.html

Kevin Levin refused to acknowledge that there was a neo-Confederate agenda in this. Levin chose to portray this as just mistaken individuals.

http://cwmemory.com/2017/03/02/the-first-female-black-confederate/

I called him out on this.

http://newtknight.blogspot.com/2017/03/levins-apologetics-for-neo-confederate.html#.WkzdBN_BqiM

What isn't generally known is that Dallas already has a monument dedicated to Black Confederates in Oak Lawn Park, formerly Robert E. Lee Park.

The Dallas Mayor's Task Force on Confederate Monuments was informed about it but chose to ignore it.

http://www.templeofdemocracy.com/two-overlooked-confederate-monuments-in-oak-lawn-park.html

Wrote Dallas Mayor Rawlings about it and copied it to all the city council members but they didn't care either.

http://newtknight.blogspot.com/2017/10/letter-to-mike-rawlings-about-two.html#.WkzVUd_BqiM

So when you are laughing at South Carolina remember Dallas actually has a plaque to Black Confederate soldiers. Dallas knows about it and has chosen to keep it.

The Confederate flag is down the tubes in South Carolina, elsewhere Confederate flags are going to be increasingly rejected

This article is titled, "SC GOP scuttles Confederate flag proposal before convention."

http://www.thestate.com/news/politics-government/article150186207.html

With Sheri Few's campaign for congress based on defending the Confederate flag went down to defeat and she only got 5% of the vote in the Republican primary, I think the South Carolina Republicans realized that there is really no substantial or even minor or slightly significant support for the Confederate flag in South Carolina and the Spartanburg County GOP resolution was dumped in the garbage.

The South Carolina Republican Party has dropped the Confederate flag and it is probably really clear to any politician with any ambition that supporting the Confederate flag will make you unwelcome in the Republican Party and additionally get you identified with Sheri Few http://newtknight.blogspot.com/2017/05/sheri-few-they-dont-love-you-gets-less.html#.WRZl-tIrKrw and Chris Corley http://newtknight.blogspot.com/2016/12/south-carolina-rep-chris-corley.html#.WRZl09IrKrw

Republicans in other states will see a developing trend and the Confederate flag isn't going to be welcome in a lot of places.

Mississippi Republicans will likely be informed that they are embarrassing the Republican Party nationally and that they should change their flag.

I think the battle over Confederate flags is going to be over Mississippi and a few rural towns. Now it is going to be over Confederate monuments

Saturday, May 06, 2017

Sheri Few they don't love you. Gets less than 5% of the vote. The Confederacy is going down.UPDATE:

Sheri Few running in a Congressional primary in South Carolina to replace a Republican who went on to a position in the Trump administration.

http://www.charlestoncitypaper.com/TheBattery/archives/2017/05/03/the-agenda-voters-reject-gun-toting-confederate-flag-candidate-sc-delegation-divided-over-drilling-demint-officially-out

Her campaign denounced the lowering of the Confederate flag off the Capitol grounds. She had videos with a military style rifle.

I suspect that she thought that she could win the primary or be in the run off in a Donald Trump type campaign.

As it is, she got less than 5% of the vote.

People prior to the election probably weren't sure what the result might be. However, now it is revealed that there isn't a base of support for the Confederate flag, even in a conservative Republican district, and she is simply ridiculous and those who supported her thought of as being ridiculous also.

Hopefully her career is over. Besides the fact that she is probably not very well liked by the Republican Party establishment and many who have hopes for the Republican Party's future prospects others will not want to back a person who has lost so badly and has taken a stand strongly offensive to public opinion.

The larger impact then the termination of the political career of a loony is the message this election sends to other politicians. Not just politicians in South Carolina, but across the South.

Up to now it hasn't been clear really how much popular support there was for the neo-Confederate agenda. The Sons of Confederate Veterans and the United Daughters of the Confederacy probably could intimidate some rural state legislators.

Now it is revealed that there really isn't much of a constituency for the Confederate flag and similar things, and not many votes. Additionally pandering to the Confederacy risks a person being compared to Sheri Few. I can see a politician ridiculed with the slogan, "Who are you, Sheri Few?" Or some such thing.

Plus support for the Confederacy has been revealed as not having a lot of political support,  it is time to go get South Carolina Confederate monuments removed also.

With the antics of Sheri Few and former South Carolina Rep. Chris Corley, support for the Confederacy will tend to seem crazy in the public's mind.

http://newtknight.blogspot.com/2016/12/south-carolina-rep-chris-corley.html#.WQ6BjNIrKiM

UPDATE

This is what happens when Republicans realize that pro-Confederate have not political clout.

http://www.thestate.com/news/politics-government/article150186207.html

South Carolina GOP drops Confederate flag proposal passed by the Spartanburg County GOP.

I probably think that the Spartanburg County GOP who passed it, probably where encouraged to not do it again by the South Carolina state leadership. Alternatively the county passed it knowing that the state leadership will dump it.

So support for the Confederate flag is largely dead in South Carolina. Perhaps some errant municipality will fly a flag but it really is over for the Confederate flag there.

And if the Confederate flag is dead in South Carolina it is largely dead across the United States except for Mississippi and a few other regions.

Sheri Few running on the pro-Confederate flag platform for the 5th Congressional District in South Carolina

These are a few videos on Sheri Few's You Tube channel.

In this video Sheri Few isn't just criticizing the removal of the Confederate flag from the South Carolina capitol grounds, but any removal of Confederate statues and flags anywhere.

CLICK ON VIDEOS TO ENTIRELY VIEW THEM.

Removal of the Confederate Flag is criticized in this video also, but with a gun.

The Daily Beast says  that Sheri Few's message is falling on "Deaf Ears." I would think that with the election of Trump journalists would be less quick to reject out of hand the prospects of a candidate like this. You might have to click on the link twice.

http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2017/04/18/candidate-s-rebel-yell-for-confederate-flag-falls-on-deaf-ears-in-south-carolina.html

I don't know if Few has any real chances or not. We will just have to wait until the Republican Primary is over. She has gotten national coverage out of a local race. Perhaps it is also a career building move.

South Carolina Rep. Chris Corley, Confederate Flag defender, arrested for domestic violence including hand gun. UPDATES: News has gone global MORE UPDATES. Indicted and suspended from office

South Carolina Rep. Chris Corley, who was a vehement defender of the Confederate flag flying on the South Carolina capitol grounds, was arrested on charges of domestic violence and pointing a hand gun at his wife. NOTE: I am updating this blog posting as more information becomes available.

http://www.aikenstandard.com/news/south-carolina-rep-chris-corley-arrested-charged-with-domestic-violence/article_b9be9ac8-cc47-11e6-9c8c-ff7a707cb5cb.html

According to the article:
Corley was arrested by the Aiken County Sheriff's Office early Tuesday morning on felony charges of first-degree domestic violence and pointing and presenting firearms at a person.
According to the Sheriff's report, as reported in the Aiken Standard, a women identified as his wife claimed that Corley was "caught cheating." The news article is not more specific on what she claimed Corley was cheating at, perhaps it was poker or golf rather then sex with other individuals.

Chris Corley has been an advocate of far right efforts. This is an article about him in the Charleston City Paper. It has background information as well as news of his arrest.

http://www.charlestoncitypaper.com/TheBattery/archives/2016/12/27/confederate-flag-defender-chris-corley-charged-with-domestic-violence-and-gun-charge-called-for-leaders-with-morals

Corley was one of the more outspoken defender of the Confederate flag on the capitol grounds. According to the Charleston City Paper article.
Ahead of the holidays last year, Corley made waves for a Christmas card he reportedly sent to GOP colleagues that showed the Confederate flag in front of the Statehouse and read: "May your Christmas be filled with memories of a happier time when South Carolina’s leaders possessed morals, convictions and the principles to stand for what is right."
Sounds like a bad stereotype. Confederate flag flying, wife beating, gun waving, and "cheating" though the articles are not specific about exactly what Corley's wife was talking about in regards to "cheating." Maybe it was gin rummy or something.

These are other articles about Chris Corley and the charges against him.

http://www.cbsnews.com/news/chris-corley-south-carolina-lawmaker-known-for-confederate-flag-beat-wife-pointed-gun/

This article at this link below has a lot of information about Corley.

It seems that the major papers for South Carolina have covered the story.

The story has even gone international.

I will keep this blog posting updated as news come out.

As I have stated before, more and more those left to be advocates for the Confederacy are likely to be persons who are not quite all there.

Ron Wilson, former Commander-in-Chief of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, was convicted for defrauding investors. http://newtknight.blogspot.com/2012/03/former-sons-of-confederate-veterans.html#.WGPBdvkrKM8

The 911 tape has been released. From the tape as reported in the Aiken Standard.

"Please stop it. Just stop. Just stop. ... Dad, please stop" can be heard on the 911 audio recording released Friday by the Aiken County Sheriff's Office. "Please stop. Stop. Please stop, Chris. Just stop daddy, just stop. Chris, please stop. Daddy. Please help. Please Chris. Chris."

The news of Chris Corley's arrest and 911 call has gone global and it includes the fact that he is a supporter of the Confederate flag. Some of these stories aren't in English.

And it includes major U.S. Media.

These articles all make the point of Corley's aggressive defense of the Confederate flag. Though all supporters can't be judged by the actions of one person, it will certainly not help the public's perception of the Confederate flag.

The dash cam video hasn't been released and I will up date this posting when it is.

Evidently you can wear a Confederate flag to jury duty in South Carolina

This is the link to the story.

From the article.

As the lawyer for the defendant, Abusaft said that “I speak for my client” and he was concerned that the shirt and its message were potentially confrontational. The flag shirt and slogan meant to send a message to people, Abusaft said.
But the judge ruled that the woman had stated that she could be fair and impartial, and did not excuse the woman from the potential jury panel.
Abusaft then chose to use one of his juror “strikes” – both sides have the right to dismiss a certain number of potential jurors when picking a jury. The woman was dismissed from the case and never was seated as a juror.
This is atrocious. The judge needs to be thrown off the bench. I don't see the name of the judge in the article which to me is how "The State" enables neo-Confederacy.

This is my article about not allowing jurors who identify with the Confederacy on juries.

Lindsey Graham out of the Presidential race, hopefully will be defeated for re-election

Lindsey Graham has dropped out of the presidential race. His campaign never did particularly well and then became irrelevant.

Lindsey Graham interviewed in the 1st Quarter 1999 Southern Partisan.  He was given a free pass on this by Columbia, South Carolina newspaper The State.

For his 2015-16 presidential campaign he hired the former editor of the Southern Partisan, Richard Quinn.

Now his presidential campaign has become irrelevant and to naught except that it is now on record that he never really regretted pandering to neo-Confederates. It would have been terrible if someone who had interviewed with the Southern Partisan was even one of the presidential candidates of a major party.

Hopefully he isn't re-elected U.S. Senator either. What is delicious irony is that the same forces which he pandered to in the Southern Partisan are the same people who are going to try to end his political career in South Carolina. It is a fate that Graham richly deserves.

There aren't too many Republican office holders who interviewed in the Southern Partisan who are still in office, but I look forward to the day when there are none.

I think  U.S. Senator Thad Cochran of Mississippi is the last one.

Sons of Confederate Veterans is re-publishing "Southern Partisan" articles. Reactionary ideology in full view.

SONS OF CONFEDERATE VETERANS PROMOTING NEO-CONFEDERATE IDEOLOGY

The South Carolina Division of the Sons of Confederate Veterans (SCV) is putting online an article from the "Southern Partisan" magazine.

http://scscv.com/why-yankees-wont-and-cant-leave-the-south-alone/

This article gives insight as to the deeply reactionary nature of neo-Confederate thought. Richard Weaver's book, "The Southern Tradition at Bay" laments women voting and is very racist.

South Carolina House of Representatives votes 94 to 20 to take down Confederate flag. Sons of Confederate Veterans found to be without influence

The article is here:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/news/post-nation/wp/2015/07/09/south-carolina-house-votes-to-remove-confederate-flag-from-statehouse-grounds/

Nikki Haley called the session to vote to remove the flag, and so it is a sure thing that she will sign.

Republican House Rep. Rick Quinn, son of the former editor of Southern Partisan almost derailed it with an amendment, but he didn't succeed.

The Sons of Confederate Veterans (SCV) have stronger political support in some states than others. In the long struggle over the Confederate flag in South Carolina they had built up considerable amount of political connections.

It wasn't too long ago that Nikki Haley was bowing and scrapping to neo-Confederates as Kevin Levin reports in his blog showing up to be interviewed by the SCV  who were making sure she was PC, politically Confederate.

http://cwmemory.com/2010/06/14/nikki-haleys-civil-war-memory-when-the-scv-asks/

So if the Sons of Confederate Veterans can be defeated in South Carolina they probably can be defeated most everywhere except maybe a couple of states.

They were defeated by close votes, but by wide margins. This makes it very difficult for SCV to retaliate at the polls by focusing on a few critical swing votes. Instead they will find them having to go after dozens of candidates. They would risk getting the Republican Party angry with them.

Legislators and elected officials now realize that now is the time to clean house of Confederate things.  Every monument removed, every flag taken down, every holiday eliminated represents not having to face a controversy over the Confederacy in the future when it might be the focus of national attention and when the SCV can focus on one issue. Now the SCV's attention is divided over many issues.

The Republicans will be especially eager to get the table cleared of potential Confederate controversies for a couple reasons. One is that they know the Democrats are likely to bring it up as a wedge issue to make things difficult for Republicans. Two they don't want it as an issue for their base to be identified with.

Another reason which will drive further elimination of Confederate symbols is that there will be a lot fewer of them. The precedent is being set again and again that they are undesirable on a bipartisan basis. The remaining instances will seem very anomalous.

Chambers of Commerce, real estate developers, business groups will not want Confederate things hurting the image of their community, especially when they are trying to attract business to their town. Especially when they are trying to hire people to move to their town.

I think that is what the real driving force against Confederate monuments is in Dallas. The business interests realize that it is really bad for business since it make Dallas look too "Old South" and"Plantation" and they are trying to be a city of the 21st century.

The SCV is struggling at this web page to stop the tide.

Babylon has fallen. South Carolina State Senate votes 37 to 3 to take down the Confederate flag.

This is the story on a vote

http://www.cnn.com/2015/07/06/politics/south-carolina-confederate-flag-debate/

Babylon is falling! Neo-Confederates give up!

There is a song by a popular song composer during the Civil War titled "Babylon Has Fallen.". However, you couldn't sing it. It uses what was called "negro dialect" and uses the term "darkies." But the composer and the people who sang this song sang it in joy over the abolition of slavery and the achievements of African Americans in destroying slavery. Such were the times.

This is a link to the cover to the music. It is quite striking.

Marriot Hotels wants to be a White House of the Confederacy

The Marriot Hotel will be the hotel for the Stephen D. Lee Institute members when they meet in South Carolina.

I want to reemphasize that I hope to use moral suasion in getting institutions not to enable neo-Confederacy. Not harassment.

Why doesn't the Sons of Confederate Veterans expel members of the Council of Conservative Citizens from their ranks.

As expected the Sons of Confederate Veterans (SCV) are issuing statements about the massacre in Charleston by Dylann Roof.

The South Carolina Division of the Sons of Confederate Veterans has put out a press release. It is on their web page at http://scscv.com/heritage-defense/.

In the press release they state:
The SC Division, Sons of Confederate Veterans has a stringently enforced Hate Policy. We will remove any member who expresses racist hatred sentiments. Anyone with ties to racist organizations will not be granted membership. The perpetrator of the vile act in Charleston has never been a member or associated with the Sons of Confederate Veterans. Unfortunately some other subversive organizations distort Confederate symbols in an attempt to make them stand for hatred and disillusion. The SCV opposes the ideals and actions of such organizations.

Yet there are members of the SCV who are openly members of the Council of Conservative Citizens and this has been going on for some time. Notice that the press release doesn't mention the Council of Conservative Citizens by name.

For example Robert Slimp has for years been involved with the Council of Conservative Citizens and he wasn't expelled. He has contributed articles to the Confederate Veteran magazine and to the SCV's Southern Mercury magazine. Then there was Leonard Wilson who was the Commander-in-Chief of the Alabama Division of the SCV, he was never expelled. Here and there I recognize names in SCV publications that I saw in the Citizen Informer, the publication of the Council of Conservative Citizens. They don't get expelled from the SCV.

Robert Slimp activities in the Council of Conservative Citizens was mostly fear mongering over the end of Apartheid in South Africa.

One of the SCV Commander-in-Chief, Ron Wilson, contributed articles to the Citizen Informer.

The Citizen Informer mentions that they are at events with the SCV and also mention SCV officers at their meeting.

So if the SCV is really concerned with "subversive organizations" they might start out first by expelling Council of Conservative Citizens members and while they are at it, League of the South members.

The United Daughters of the Confederacy and their shrine to white racist terrorists the Red Shirts is getting national news coverage.

I have been trying to bring this to the public's attention for years. I am happy to report that the Red Shirt museum in Edgefield, South Carolina which is run by the United Daughters of the Confederacy is being given news coverage via an Associated Press news story.  The Red Shirts were violent white supremacists who overthrew democracy in South Carolina in 1876.

The following are links to the story appearing in different newspapers.

http://chronicle.augusta.com/news/metro/2014-12-20/edgefield-museum-shrine-south-carolina-red-shirts-who-attacked-blacks-during  (Georgia near the border of South Carolina.)

From the article:
The home of a Confederate officer who helped take power away from blacks and drive Republicans out of South Carolina’s government after the Civil War is now a museum honoring the Confederacy and its leaders. Those leaders include the “Red Shirts,” who used violence and intimidation to end Reconstruction in the state.
The article also mentions the Hamburg "massacre" of African Americans.

It appears the same article is being run in newspapers across the country.

Wrote President of the Southern Baptist Convention and officers of the Ashley River Baptist Church and all the members of the Executive Board of the Southern Baptist Convention

I wrote a letter to Dr. Ronnie Floyd, President of the Southern Baptist Convention, all the board members of the Executive Committee as well as all the leaders of the Ashley River Baptist Church concerning the unfortunate decision of Ashley River Baptist Church to host the Sons of Confederate Veterans on their 2014 Reunion.

The letters are still working their way through the mail system as I type this post.

What is interesting is that the neo-Confederate movement has ridiculed the Southern Baptist Convention over their apology over slavery, yet the Ashley River Baptist Church has chosen to lend their facilities to a movement which mocks them.

I sent Dr. Floyd quite a bit of documentation. I think it will be somewhat surprising to the Southern Baptist to read the rather disrespectful and virulent condemnations of the Southern Baptist Church.

The letter sent to Dr. Floyd was sent by certified mail and the others were sent with proof of mailing.

The letter is as follows:

October 27, 2014

                                                                   Edward H. Sebesta

                                                                   edwardsebesta@gmail.com

Dr. Ronnie Floyd
President
The Executive Committee, Southern Baptist Convention
901 Commerce Street
Nashville, TN 37203-3699

Dear Dr. Floyd:

I regret to report that the Ashley River Baptist Church, a member of the Southern Baptist Convention, hosted an event for the 2014 National Reunion of the Sons of Confederate Veterans (SCV). It is reported in the July 30, 2014 issue of the Times Examiner.  I enclose a copy, and the article can be read online at http://www.timesexaminer.com/historical/1914-2014-national-reunion-of-sons-of-confederate-veterans.

The SCV is a group which promotes what I believe and I think any rational person would believe are extremist and racist beliefs as documented in an article by myself at Black Commentator, http://www.blackcommentator.com/526/526_confederacy_sebesta_guest_share.html. I enclose a copy. I do investigative research regarding the neo-Confederate movement. My research has been published by university presses, peer reviewed academic journals, as well as by Black Commentator. My resume is online at www.templeofdemocracy.com/resume.htm. I enclose a copy.

When churches lend neo-Confederate groups the use of their facilities they not only give them support through the use of their facilities but additionally they lend the prestige and credibility of their individual church and denomination to that group. The church is also party to the enabling the agenda of the neo-Confederates.

I am disappointed in the Ashley River Baptist Church actions. The Southern Baptist churches have had a record of not hosting the national conventions of neo-Confederate groups. For national conventions from 1990 to 2014 only one Southern Baptist church had hosted the United Daughters of the Confederacy, which was First Baptist Church of Columbia in South Carolina.  For 1990 to 2013 I don’t find any record of a Southern Baptist church hosting the national convention of the Sons of Confederate Veterans. I enclose tables of hosting churches and bar graphs of the hosting by denomination.  This information can also be found online at the web page www.templeofdemocracy.com/churchesoftheconfederacy.htm.

I had had written the four denominations leading in hosting neo-Confederate national convention services not to host the SCV: Episcopalians (both factions), United Methodist, Presbyterians and Roman Catholics (See again enclosed bar graphs). There were indications that the SCV was having difficulties finding a church.

I did not write any organizations of Southern Baptists in South Carolina since I thought Southern Baptists wouldn’t do such a thing. The Southern Baptist church had seemed to be moving forward on the issue of race with such notable actions as the 1995 apology for slavery. It had seemed that the Southern Baptists comprehended that Christianity was a global effort with no one race or nation privileged over another. Yet this doesn’t seem to be the situation.

The neo-Confederate movement besides bringing back into print nearly every antebellum book defending slavery have also been publishing some modern theological defenses of slavery.

The neo-Confederates have been condemning the Southern Baptist Convention for their apology regarding slavery since the resolution was passed in 1995. (http://www.sbc.net/resolutions/899).  The notorious Southern Partisan had two condemnations published. [2nd Quarter, Vol. 15, 1995, pp. 7 Wesley Pruden; 3rd Quarter, Vol. 15, 1995, pp. 56 Samuel Francis. Documentation enclosed.]

Though the Sons of Confederate Veterans has not directly condemned the Southern Baptists for their resolution, they have strongly promoted and praised the writings that have condemned the Southern Baptists.

Gary Lee Roper has written a book, “Antebellum Slavery: An Orthodox View,” 2008, advocating a pro-slavery theology, in which on pages 281-82 he condemns the Southern Baptist apology and calls those who passed it “pompous ignoramus.” I enclose documentation.

This book is promoted and praised by the Sons of Confederate Veterans in their publication Chaplain’s Corps Chronicles of the Sons of Confederate Veterans. In the April 2008 issue the SCV Chaplain’s Corps praises the book and tells the readers it is a “must read.” Documentation enclosed.  (http://www.scv.org/pdf/chaplains/2008_Apr.pdf ).

The book is also sold in the SCV catalog, SCV’s online store, and in their official publication Confederate Veteran. I enclose documentation.

Walter D. Kennedy has written a book “Myths of American Slavery,” Pelican Publishing Company, 2003. The Southern Baptists are denounced for their apology on pages 88-96 in a section titled “Radical Influence in the Southern Baptist Convention,” in a chapter titled “Abolitionism Versus Christianity.” On page 89 the author states:

“The passing of the so-called Racial Reconciliation Resolution by the assembled delegates defamed and otherwise slandered the good name of Southern Baptists of the past 150 years. The resolution is nothing more than liberal double-speak for an act of cultural genocide against the South.”

Elsewhere on page 89 the resolution is called “infamous” and the author states, “The duped delegates regurgitated on cue the abolitionist (i.e. liberal) propaganda about the institution of African servitude and life in the Old South.” I enclose documentation.

This book is sold in the SCV catalog, SCV’s online store, and in their official publication Confederate Veteran. I enclose documentation.

The Southern Baptists may have apologized over slavery in 1995 but in 2014 it is aiding and abetting an organization that is promoting pro-slavery theology and a neo-Confederate ideology that condemns the Southern Baptist Convention.

One concern I have developed in investigating neo-Confederate groups is how they are enabled by mainstream organizations such as corporations, churches, government bodies and others. So I have decided to ask these groups to reconsider their relations with specific neo-Confederate groups. It is all well and good that I have written on extremist Confederate Christian nationalists for the Canadian Review of American Studies (http://www.templeofdemocracy.com/ConfederateChristianNationalism.pdf), but I have realized that the enabling of a racist historical consciousness in the general public and racist neo-Confederate groups by mainstream churches is as detrimental to America as these fringe churches referred to in my paper. The Christianity advocated by the SCV is largely similar. You can review their Chaplain’s Chronicle online at http://www.scv.org/about/chaplainsChronicle.php and http://chaplain-in-chief.com/.

In the summer of 2013 I had a successful campaign getting corporations to stop supporting the SCV as reported in a Black Commentator article which is available online at a free guest link at http://www.blackcommentator2.com/527_cover_scv_donation_loss_sebesta_guest.html. (Link is also in my online resume.) It took eight days for this campaign to succeed. I regret to say that so far the temples of Mammon were much more willing to give up neo-Confederacy than the churches of Christ.

I ask that the churches of the Southern Baptist Convention not host the events of neo-Confederate organizations.

Finally as other denominations inevitably move away from hosting neo-Confederate groups the neo-Confederate groups will seek alternatives and the Southern Baptist Convention risks being the leading church hosting neo-Confederate organizations. This transition seems to have already started.

                                                                   Sincerely Yours,

                                                                   Edward H. Sebesta

PS: My website is undergoing redesign, but there will be redirects for all the pages that were on www.templeofdemocracy.com and the web pages mentioned should be easily found. The resume will be Curriculum Vitae, etc.
